Spintronics utilizes the spin degree of freedom in addition to the charge of the electron to process information. This new technology holds the promise to achieve low energy spin logic devices and non-volatile information storage. Graphene, in particular has attracted a lot of attention in the spintronics community, owing to its high spin diffusion length (over ens of microns) and long spin lifetime. Furthermore, the electrical properties (carrier density, band gap) and magnetic properties (spin orbit coupling) of graphene can be tuned by gating, functionalization and adatom doping of the surface. These exceptional and versatile properties make graphene a channel material of choice for spintronics applications such as reconfigurable spin logic devices.
