APPROVED COURSES FOR THE IMME CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
For your capstone course, the Integrated Major in Math and English (IMME) offers a choice between two courses:
- MATH 2010S: Intersections of Mathematics and Society: Hidden Figures (3 credit hours)
This is a project-based learning course inspired by the book Hidden Figures which tells the story of African American mathematicians during the space race. Students are paired with leaders in STEM positions at companies in the Greater Columbus area who are ‘Hidden Figures’.
- MATH 4504: History of Mathematics (3 credit hours)
This course studies the history of mathematics, its mathematicians, and great theorems. Topics include the development of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
OPTIONAL ADD ONS
Apart from your approved Capstone course, you can add other elements to enhance your overall package for employers. These include research options and internships.
UNDERGRADUATE THESIS
During your degree, you will likely study several 4000 level courses which are more research intensive. If you would like to pursue a particular avenue of research, e.g. you wrote an essay for History of Mathematics on the great mathematician Alan Turing and you wanted to research his work further, an undergraduate thesis could be a good option, and you could utilize one of these codes from either department:
- MATH 4999 Undergraduate Thesis;
- ENG 4999 Undergraduate Thesis in English.
Several faculty have volunteered to supervise IMME students, as well as contacts in business and industry who would be happy to co-supervise and offer real world problems to solve. Willing faculty include:
From English:
- Prof. Alan B. Farmer, farmer.109@osu.edu Specialism: Shakespeare, history and economics, digital studies.
- Prof. Molly J. Farrell, farrell.73@osu.edu Specialism: history of population science, currently writing The Making of Numbers in Colonial America.
- Prof. John Jones, jones.6181@osu.edu Specialism: digital media, professional and technical communication.
- Dr. Cathy Ryan, ryan.3@osu.edu Specialism: Digital media studies, business, and professional communication.
From Mathematics:
- Prof. Jim Fowler, fowler.291@osu.edu Specialism: Topology, geometric group theory.
- Prof. John Johnson, johnson.5316@osu.edu Specialism: Topological algebra, Ramsay Theory.
- Prof. Dan Thompson, thompson.2455@osu.edu Specialism: Ergodic theory, dynamical systems, symbolic dynamics, thermodynamic formalism, geometry.
INTERSHIPS
