What is the IMME?
The Integrated Major in Math and English (IMME) is an innovative program designed to prepare students with high-level skills in both Mathematics and English stressing an integrated, complementary mastery of these disciplines.
What makes IMME students unique?
The IMME is a great opportunity for students who enjoy quantitative work, but who also enjoy literature or writing. What this means is that you might be a left-brain and a right-brain thinker. You may be a student who likes numbers and words.
What makes IMME students unique is their interdisciplinary approach to and competency in both Mathematics and English. IMME students can bring together the precision and rigor of mathematical thinking with the creativity and challenge of analyzing works of literature and popular culture as well as writing clearly and precisely.
Some theorists label this kind of student as a generalist, but this rather bland word describes an incredible set of skills for the workplace and the world. Interdisciplinary majors often recognize problems and opportunities that others immersed in only one discipline might not. They are excellent at analogical and lateral thinking, and they develop multiple kinds of skills in their Mathematics and English courses which they can use as in the pursuit of their academic and career goals.
What careers are the pursued by IMME graduates?
Students from the IMME are well prepared to find positions in banks, insurance, marketing, consulting, non-profit organizations, education, publishing, journalism, further research and graduate study, or other fields that require both mathematical awareness and strong communication skills.
The IMME is an advantage to many students intending to continue on to graduate school or a professional program, including those interested in law, medicine, business, and education.
Why major in IMME?
The IMME offers undergraduates the opportunity to develop a set of skills that will equip them not only for employment and graduate school, but for long-term career success. Students completing the program will have a competitive advantage over their peers by having a strong grounding in data analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Mathematics teaches precision in modeling and in analyzing real-world problems, and it involves skills in calculation and numerical analysis which are not typically part of a liberal arts program.
Liberal Arts majors learn critical thinking and analytical skills. In addition, the English program’s strong emphasis on reading and writing teaches the ability to think critically and analytically, to process information, and to communicate effectively.
These are all skills that employers constantly claim they need.
What courses do students take on the IMME?
Four Mathematics concentration areas are available: Finance/Actuarial, Applied, Math Pre-Education, and Theoretical.
For English, you can take a number of pathways, such as: “Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy”, and “Literature & Popular Culture”. You can also mix and match with our minor pathways, which include Professional Writing, Disability Studies, Medical Humanities, and Game Studies. Another option could be Digital Media Studies which covers topics like promotional media.
IMME majors take a capstone course that provides an opportunity to integrate and apply the full range of knowledge and skills you have acquired through their previous coursework to real-world practice. This capstone course combines both professional development and leadership opportunities and a capstone project on a topic chosen from real-world challenges related to community and industry partners.
