IA Scholars Discuss Economic Crisis in Venezuela

On Sunday, August 26th, IA Scholars discussed the current economic crisis in Venezuela with the IA Scholars Academic Events Chair, Sam Stelnicki.  Several times throughout the semester, IA Scholars join together for “Current Events Conversations” on select topics in international politics, culture, public policy, and more.

IA Scholars Give Back in Annual Community Service Event

Several IA Scholars participated in the annual Community Commitment Pay It Forward event on Saturday, August 26th.  Each year, over 50 community service sites and projects partner with Ohio State for multiple daylong community service projects.  This year, IA Scholars traveled to the  Cat Welfare Association; the association is dedicated to the care of and education about cats and kittens. Our pledge is to cherish, nurture and provide veterinary care for homeless, abused, injured, and abandoned felines.

IA Scholars First Year Retreat

On Sunday, August 19th, the first-year IA Scholars cohort traveled to SuperGames in Worthington for a series of teambuilding activities designed to build community, allow for the first years to meet each other, and kick off the fall semester.  The annual retreat is a great opportunity for Scholars to get to know each other before classes start and the semester gets underway.

Close to Home: The Refugee Crisis and Columbus (2 points)

Hosted by No Lost Generation at OSU this event features a panel about the refugee crisis occurring in the Middle East/Levantine region and the city of Columbus’s role in providing sanctuary for those affected. This panel will include an expert on the region (Professor Daniel Silverman), members of a Columbus area refugee services organization, and a local student refugee. We hope to bring more awareness to the topic by discussing the events that have catalyzed such a widespread crisis. We will also discuss how the current state of the refugee crisis influences the Columbus community and how it may affect you.

Holocaust Seder (2 points)

This event is designed to show the struggles of the Holocaust and the harrowing events that came with it, through the Jewish Passover tradition of Seder. This is done in part through readings by people who lived through the Holocaust, some Holocaust historians, lots of symbolism, and plenty of discussion. “Seder” is the Hebrew word for order and, in case you didn’t know, is the introductory meal to the celebration of Passover, to which there is a very specific order in which food is served and blessings are made. Food for the Seder will be provided by Hillel.

Before World War Two, Poland’s 3.5 million Jews made the country the epicenter of the Jewish world. Today less than 20,000 Jews live there. Due to the Holocaust and ensuing Soviet era, Poland’s remaining Jews hid their identity from their children. With the fall of Communism in 1989 a young generation of Jews began learning their long-buried ancestry. The Return focuses on four women in their 20’s who face the unique challenge of trying to create an identity in a vacuum, with little knowledge of their heritage. The Return depicts their valiant efforts at creating a new, authentic Jewish community. This event is hosted by OSU Hillel

Hosted by the Arab Student Union (ASU) Arab Night is a night of performances, including traditional dances, live music, poetry, a flag show, a fashion show and much more. The main goal for this event is to showcase the diversity of the Arab world and familiarize the audience with the Arab culture, through artistic and creative performances. Everyone is welcome to attend and it is free admission.
Columbus Symphony: Russian Winter Festival II (2 points)

The College of Arts and Sciences is sponsoring this Night at the Columbus Symphony Orchestra onFriday, March 3.  The night includes a pre-concert reception at the Urban Arts Space, followed by the Symphony performance of the Russian Winter Festival II.  Bus transportation, ticket, light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be provided free of charge.  Meet the bus at the Ohio Union bus turnaround at 6:30pm.  You will return to campus around 10:00pm.  RSVP Here.
 
Refugee Advocacy Training (2 points)

Hosted by Refuge, a newly formed student organization at OSU and Central Ohio Solidarity with Refugees and Immigrants, this training aims to look at the economic implications of refugees in the United States, how the vetting process works, what the resettlement process entrails and how to advocate for refugees at home and abroad. A guest speaker who plans to share a personal account about life as a newly resettled refugee.
