Maintaining Motivation

Something that I learned in this building focus and building motivation module would be avoiding distractions which happens often. One tip I will incorporate and use is putting my thoughts on paper. I think our generation is so use to having a device in our hand and able to touch screens to get ideas and thoughts down. However, writing something triggers your brain to memorize it more as well as when going back to it will stimulate ideas. Something I practice now are taking intentional breaks during my work. I do think this helps with keeping your mind clear and no overload of information which can get lost in the midst of studying or working on a project for hours. Another thing I practice which I think contributes most to my mental (and physical) health is physical exercise. This releases all the endorphins and allows my mind to become clear and able to tackle my work with a sharp mind. A tip I would give students or professionals would be to find something that allows you to enter a flow state and eliminates stress.

Searching and Researching

Going into this research topic I decided to search the OSU library website and search for peer reviewed articles. This is because I would be able to make sure the source was credible and I did this able by looking at credentials as well the language used in this article as well as the format of the article. During this article the information did not seemed biased, there were facts about the topic as well as misconceived facts and theories. There are a list of references at the bottom which also reinforces the creditability of the article. They compared different levels of participation even athletes verses nonathletic players as well. The uniformity of the information seems to be inline throughout the entire article. Although this article goes into detail to the average reader they might not understand all the information presented.

The importance of this topic and what i have learned is your work will hold more weight if you have creditable and reliable sources.

Procrastination: Why Students procrastinate? How to Overcome

During this lesson we learned about procrastination and why is happens, why students procrastination, and how to overcome it. Specifically talking about students – procrastination is one of the main barriers blocking students  from getting up, making the right decisions and living the life they want. Prior to entering this lesson I have had an understanding of procrastination and why it happens – however my own conclusion I came to when thinking about this lesson is, when you procrastinate, you waste time which you could be using to invest in something meaningful that you have set a goal for and have yet to achieve. Changing a viewpoint and thinking about procrastination as an enemy you have to get up every day and fight I think students in general will have a better time dealing with this obstacle.  Now the main question is, Why? Why do people procrastinate? Maybe those who fear failure – for instance if a straight A student were to work on an assignment 3 weeks prior to the due date and get an average grade they would feel as though they failed. However if that same person works two days before the due date and get the same grade the student will feel accomplished and satisfied. The one point where I respectfully disagree is, because the student does not want to do the best job due to standards being placed on them to constantly do well due to the stigma of their classmates (who doesn’t want to be the smart one). I disagree because, some may perform well under pressure and depending on the assignment will either thrive during the assignment or not. The last type which was mentioned was the type to resent authority. I have seen all three types of procrastination first hand however the one I think he left out which is important is, life. Life gets in the way of responsibilities sometimes and assignments pile up and if it is not a top priority then an individual will rather focus on their top priority.

Learning about strategies to overcome this and the ones I relate to the most is Find your Flow and stay in it, Identify your Big Rocks and Develop Routines and Discipline. These three are key to me, entering in a flow state and finding a rhythm will allow one to accomplish what they set out to do in a timely and effective manner. The next two finding your Big Rocks and Developing a Routines and Discipline go hand in hand. I say this because when realizing what are your Big Rocks and placing them in your life will at the same time make you realize what is important and force yourself into a routine putting those Big Rocks first. Notifying what contributes to your personal procrastination and how to get over them are the biggest keys during this lesson.

Blog Post Mod 2

I think the two most useful things I’ve learned in the module was about blogs and communication tools to help communicate better online. I learned why blogs are so important to todays culture and the fast paced world we live in today. “Blogs engage people in knowledge sharing, reflection, and debate, they often attract a large and dedicated readership”. However without putting the word ‘blog’ there just by reading that quote from ‘7 Things you should know about … Blogs’ me personally would think automatically about a podcast. I believe podcast are the new blogs. People now a days would rather listen to people share their experience with different voice inflections and how they deliver the content because I can perceive something differently from reading it and hearing it. Something I have put into practice already is the use of Google Doc. I have used it and it has always been a good experience, especially with group members and being able to work on it all at once and having it saved automatically is genius. I would be able to take the ideas and examples about blogs and start my own – or take those ideas and start a podcast. Something I have been wanting to do. The advice I would give working professionals is, online communication is crucial in today’s society and to students –  having the tools to write a clear and concise email is key.
