Buckeyethon

Buckeyethon was an eye opening experience that I am so grateful I could partake in. During the fundraising, I didn’t feel attached to the project because I had never met nor interacted with any of the kids impacted by the benefit.

On February 7th, that idea changed. I got to experience Buckeyethon and it’s impacts for the first time. I met a few kids and their families and hear their stories. That night in the Ohio Union was not only fun, but it was emotional and became easily the best night of my college career.

This fundraiser has become more than just a fundraiser because of the people and the impact it has shown me. I would not give that experience up for anything, and can’t wait to do it again next year!

End-of-Year Reflection

At the beginning of this academic year, my perception of school and what I would be doing was very different. First, I did not think I would be finding myself loving this school as much as I do. I loved it when I visited, but I was very unopened to making new acquaintances and being at school every weekend. I knew that going home so often was effecting my grades, my relationships, and my overall health.

When second semester came around, I said no more. I stayed at school the entire semester (before spring break) and engaged in all that I could. I talked to the director of my scholar’s and advisors a lot more. I also attended more activities with my peers, such as basketball games and going to the gym. I really blossomed into the extroverted person that I normally am. It took a while, but I began to use my voice more, and became comfortable with campus and being put to the test everyday.

Goals!

As a first year student, I feel that I have not quite gone in depth with my goals, as I am settling in and getting to know OSU more. Here are a few things I have been able to accomplish within my first year.

Academic Achievement: I have been accepted into my program this year, which is academic based.

Leadership: I am on my scholar’s Leadership Council and will be making decisions for my scholar peers.

Service Engagement: This year, I have been able to volunteer with the Columbus Marathon, a local Columbus high school, and Buckeyethon, among other things. All of these experiences were all very unique in themselves, as well as aspiring and fun to partake in.

I still have a very long way to go, and I hope to grow myself within the community, in my academia and in my personal skills and assets.

About Me!

Hello, my name is Julian Herman! I am a first year pursuing an Athletic Training degree in the school of Health and Rehabilitation Services as well as a Leadership minor. I am member of the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars. DSWS has given me a chance to meet many people and give back to the Columbus community.

I am originally from Gnadenhutten, Ohio. I graduated fourth in my class from Indian Valley High School with an Honor’s diploma and served as our National Honor Society’s Vice President. I also served as a Varsity Volleyball Team Captain and CPR aide.

I previously have been a certified lifeguard for the last two years and certified in CPR for the least three. I plan to become a certified athletic trainer and go to graduate school for my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

For now, I serve on my scholar’s leadership council and volunteer at my local high school when at home.
