Year in Review 2019

I’ve made a few big changes this year. I officially decided that a future in business is not for me and changed my major to microbiology during the autumn semester. It was a bit of a difficult decision considering I didn’t know how it would affect my being in business scholars, but once I talked it over with Jena, everything turned out fine and I am very happy with my decision.

Another big thing this semester was that I started volunteering at the Ohio State University Medical Center. I volunteer once a week for three hours and it is a very rewarding experience. I am able to meet all kinds of people, both patients and staff. The first photo I included is me in the volunteer lounge after having walked a mile and a half in 3″ of snow, while it was still snowing, to get there on time at 6 in the morning.

This year I also got a job, which I didn’t do last year. I’ve been working at Panera since August of 2018 and I love the people I meet as well as those I work with. I gained a couple of really good friends through working there and am hoping to continue working there next year as well.

Along with changing to microbiology, I’ve also decided to go on the Pre-Med track. The second picture is my trying to teach myself anatomy, which I have to say, drawing it like that did help a bit. I’ve been interesting in the medical field since I was young, but never wanted to dedicate myself to all the years of schooling. I realized that if I want to enjoy my future career I might as well suffer a bit as the start and enjoy my job the rest of my life.

Those are pretty much the only big changes I’ve made this year, so I don’t have too much to reflect on. As the third photo, I just included a picture of the sky on north campus that I thought was a bit picturesque and that I enjoy quite a bit. I’ve realized this year that I enjoy looking at the sky and watching the clouds during the day, and stars at night. Along with this, I’ve realized the wonder that are planetariums, I love going and learning about the stars.

Artifacts

On November 19th, I, along with two other members of my FYLI organization, went to an animal shelter called Colony Cats. While we were there we cleaned up all the rooms that the cats stayed in, then I went next door where the sick cats and very young kittens and their mothers stayed. With those cats I cleaned all their cages and gave them new food and water. This artifact is the logo to the shelter and it is important to me because, I like to remember where I have volunteered in the past and because I enjoyed it while helping, I may want to volunteer there in the future and this way I can easily find which shelter it was that I helped out at.

About Me

My name is Taylor Hafner and I am a first-year International Business and Marketing student in the Fisher College of Business with a minor in Communications. I am a member of the Business Scholars Program within the university. This program has made it easier to connect with people in my year as well as some people from the second year through the scholars peer mentors.

In regards to campus involvement, I am currently in 2 clubs/organizations. The first organization is nicknames FYLI, which stands for First Year Leadership Initiative. I joined this organization in September of 2017. In this org we learn and develop out leadership and professional development skills while doing fun activities during our weekly meeting, and have the occasional outing to places like the ARC and the North Market. The other club I am a member of is boxing club. I only joined this club recently, in January of 2018. This one is pretty self-explanatory — during our meetings we learn to box and also do other sorts of physical activity, like lifting weights or running.
