How To Play UltraQuest:

Objective of the Game: A party of four brave heroes, all chosen by the player, are going on a grand quest to collect the 5 legendary Earth Crystals and Defeat the Evil Warlock King, in order to restore balance to the World.

Before beginning to play UltraQuest, the caps lock must be turned on because every input the game asks for will be capitalized.

When the player first loads up the game they will notice a world map displayed on the screen, in the top left-hand corner of the map is their party, they can move their party around the world map by choosing which direction to go in. In order to move the party up the player must type U in order to execute this action (when prompted for a direction to move in). To move down the player must type D, to move left type L and to move right type R.

There are various doors scattered about the World Map, these lead to different locations on the map. These can be entered by simply moving to the exact tile where the door is on the World Map. There are three types of locations (the descriptions of these locations will be provided in the upcoming paragraphs): the shoppe, the Temple of Awakening and the Temples.

Before the player begins their quest they must choose their party. Their party consists of four members whose classes are determined by the player. The player can choose a knight (by typing K when prompted), a black belt (by typing BB), a black mage (by typing BM) or a white mage (by typing W) (see description of Battles for explanation of classes), each member of the party starts out with 500 health.

Battles:

When the player gets involved in a battle, which occurs in the various Temples throughout the game (see description of Temples), a battle screen will be displayed. The top of the screen displays the monsters the player will be fighting (ranging from 1 monster to 4), the bottom of the screen displays the players party. When engaged in a battle with multiple monsters the player can decide which monster they want to aim an attack at, this done by choosing the position of the monster as they are displayed on the screen, the monster that is the farthest left can be attacked by typing 1, the one to the right of that monster can be attack by typing 2, this pattern repeats up to 4 (if the player is only fighting one monster there will be no prompt). The battling system in UltraQuest is turn based, the player always starts of the battle and chooses which action their four party members perform. After the players turn the monster’s turn begins, they will deal damage to the player party. If either a monster or party member health drop to zero they will no longer be able to participate in the battle (unless the party member is healed either by health potion or White Mage), the parties current health is then displayed after the monster’s turn. The battle ends when either all of the monsters health is zero or all of the party members health is zero. If the latter occurs the player will lose the game.

Before the battle begins the exact health of each monster is displayed and the player is asked whether they’d like to equip any items. Items are equipped by choosing the index of the item as it is displayed to the player (1 for shield, 2 for sword, 3 for health potion, 4 for boots). Once the player has chosen which item they’d like to equip the then most determine which party member to equip it to, this is done by typing in the number in which the party member was chosen, so if the knight was chosen first and the player wants to equip an item to them they must type in 1. Here is a description of each item (NOTE: items cannot be stacked, so equipping multiple swords to one party member doesn’t increase their attack to the power of two swords; also each item is only valid for one battle so if the player uses a shield then the next battle the effects of the shield will no longer be active):

Sword: The sword increases the attack power of any party member it is equipped to by 20

Shield: The shield increases the health of any party member it is equipped to by 20

Health Potion: Increases the health of any party member by 100

Boots: Have no effect (see Shoppe for intended purpose)

The player can have up to four different classes for their party, they order in which they are allowed to perform actions is based on the order that they were originally chosen in.

Description of Classes:

Knight: The Knight can perform two different actions, the first is attacking (executed by typing A when prompted) and the second is defending (executed by typing D when prompted). Attacking deals direct damage to an enemy, the amount of damage depends on whether the player has a sword equipped or if they have obtained an upgrade or not (see the Temple of Awakening for better description of upgrades). Defending gives the party member 20 more health, which recovers the health lost from one monster strike.

Black Belt: The Black Belt plays the same as the knight so see the previous descriptions for the Black Belts abilities.

Black Mage: The Black Mage can perform two different actions, the first is using magic (executed by typing M when prompted) and the second is defending (executed by typing D when prompted). If the player chooses magic then the player will have a secondary decision to make, which spell to use. The Black Mage has three unique spells (which are executed by typing the first letter of the spell when prompted):

Lightning (L): Decreases a single monster’s health by 40.

Tornado (T): Decreases two monster’s health by 20 (if only fighting one monster has the same effect as Lightning)

Poison (P): Decreases a monster’s health by a fifth of their current health (note this effect doesn’t work on bosses, during a boss battle poison will only decrease the bosses health by 20)

The Black Mages spell’s power is augmented by getting upgraded (see Temple of Awakening for better description of upgrades) however when a sword is equipped it only increases the power of the Lightning spell. Defending gives the party member 20 more health, which recovers the health lost from one monster strike.

White Mage: The White Mage has three different actions, Healing (executed by typing in H when prompted), attacking (executed by typing in A when prompted) and defending (executed by typing in D when prompted). Healing can give any party member the player chooses 20 more health. The player chooses which party member to heal by typing in the number in which they were chosen, so if the knight was chosen first then the number corresponding to the knight will be 1. Attacking deals direct damage to an enemy, the amount of damage depends on whether the player has a sword equipped or if they have obtained an upgrade or not (see the Temple of Awakening for better description of upgrades). Defending gives the party member 20 more health, which recovers the health lost from one monster strike.

If the player manages to win the battle they will get certain drops. These drops can either be items, money or experience. Money can be used to purchase items at the shoppe (see Shoppe for better description) and experience can be used to upgrade the party (see Temple of Awakening for better description).

The Shoppe: At the shoppe, which is located somewhere on the World Map for the player to find, is a place where the player can either by or trade items. If they want to buy an item (executed by typing 1 when prompted) then a display of the three purchasable items will be presented to the player. The three items that can be bought are a shield ($100), a sword ($100) or a health potion ($600). The player can purchase the item if they have enough money. The player can also trade items (executed by typing 2 when prompted) they have for money or other items. The player can trade a sword or a shield for in exchange for $100 or the player can trade 100 boots for a health potion. If the player wants to leave the shoppe they must type -1 when prompted.

Temple of Awakening: At the Temple of Awakening, which is located somewhere on the World Map for the player to find, is a place where the player can upgrade their party. There are two upgrades: The first upgrade can be obtained by having 1000 or more experience (obtained from defeating monsters), the second upgrade can be obtained by having 5000 or more experience. The first upgrade changes all four party members health from 500 to 1000 and gives them an extra 25 attack power. The second upgrade gives the four party members 2000 health and gives them an extra 50 attack power.

Temples: There are 5 temples located around the World Map, each one of them has a final boss at the end of it who has an Earth Crystal (the location of the boss is indicated by a green square on the Temple map). The main objective of the game is to obtain all 5 of these crystals, thus beating all 5 Temple bosses (the final Temple’s boss is the Evil Warlock King). The player can fight monster in the Temple, every monster fight is random. As the player moves about the Temple they have a 60% chance of fighting a monster every time they move. There are various items scattered about the Temples, when the player moves over them they will pick them up and they will be added to their inventory.

How To Play Blackjack:

The game first prompts the user to select a number of player (1, 2 or 3). At the beginning of the game, the users are notified they start the game with 1000 Gold.

Betting: Each other is prompted to bet. The bet must be less than the total the player currently has. The total available to each player is displayed on the top right of the screen. During the betting round, each player takes a turn. If less than 3 players selected, the non-selected character is controlled by the computer.

The deck is then shuffled, and dealer will show only one card of their deck prior to the playing round.

Playing Round:

During each players first turn, the options to Hit (1), Stand (2) or DoubleDown (3) are displayed.  Hit means get another card, stand means end the turn with no more cards. Double down is an option where the player can double their bet, only receive one more card, and ends their turn. This option is only available during the players first action of their playing round, and only if player has enough gold for doubling down.  The players turn ends when the player busts (total > 21), stands (no more cards), or doubles down.

Each player completes their round entirely, in order of player 1, then player 2 (if selected), and player 3 (if selected).

Dealer Round:

Since all players play against the dealer, the hard rule that is displayed on the table is that if the dealer hand is less than 17, the dealer hits. The dealer hits until they are 17 or over.

If the hand is 17 or over, the dealer stands, and will receive no more cards. The dealers card are then revealed.

Payouts:

If the player had blackjack (defined as Ace + 10 value card on their first draw), 1.5x bet is paid out. If player busts, the bet is lost and deduced from the total. If player total matches dealer total, then the hand is a PUSH, and the bet is returned to the player (Net 0). If player’s total is greater than dealer, then player wins. If dealer’s total greater than player, then dealer wins.
Changes are displayed in top left, totals are updated in top right, and dealer displays “Good Game.”

Finally, the users are prompted if they would like to play again. If not, the game determines who wins, and prints out the winner. The game also ends if one user loses all their money.
