User Identification & Interviews

Battleship is a fun game that can be played by people of all ages. The game was designed to cater towards more competitive players, but people playing a quick game just for fun can still get the full experience and enjoyment of the game. We interviewed two students to talk about their gaming experience before and during the development of our game.

Interview #1 (before development)

  • What are some games you have played recently?
    • I have played, Portal 2 and Smash Brothers Brawl recently.
  • What are some games you might enjoy playing in MATLAB?
    • I would enjoy playing hangman, battleship, and that card game: memory.
  • In your opinion, what is the optimal length a game should take to play?
    • Probably around 1 to 10 minutes, but it would really depend on the skill level of the player.
  • What aspects of a game make it enjoyable to you to play?
    • A challenging computer, an aesthetically pleasing design, sweet explosions for battleship, and praise for winning the game would make the game very enjoyable.

Interview #2 (during development)

  • Did you enjoy playing our game?
    • I thoroughly enjoyed playing our game.
  • Was the length of the game good?
    • I thought the game on easy difficulty was a little short. It should be noted that the difficulty has been increased in the final game.
  • What did you think of our graphics?
    • I thought the pictures were “very nice” but the computer’s ships need to be hidden. It should be noted that seeing the computer’s ships was a developer tool made for easy testing.
  • What aspects of the game made it enjoyable to you to play (or not!)?
    • Being competitive against the computer was very fun; however, there were some errors which made the game incomplete.
  • Do you have any suggestions to improve our game?
    • Get rid of and fix errors so the game can be played in full.
