Culture Shock

Whenever I heard “Culture Shock”, I recall the first moment that made me embarrassed by proving my stereotype was wrong.

Since my both parent had worked, often times I had pizza for dinner. I tried every one of menu from local pizza to major pizza brands like Pizza hut,  Papa johns, and Mr. Pizza. When I was done trying every pizza brands nearby, I started to wonder that how the pizza in the U.S. and Italy is different from here in Korea.  So as soon as I’ve come here to the U.S., I tried Pizza and I had culture shock because american pizza is very different than I thought.

Pizza here is mostly simple which has one or two topping on it. Moreover people are likely to have cheese pizza without topping. For me, adapted to Korean style pizza having a lot of topping on it, it was surprising.

Strangers are nice to each other. They will holding the doors for each other when they go into the buildings. They will say good morning if they meet in the street.

Staffs in banks or restaurants are polite and patient.

Culture shock experience for Tom

Things seemed to be all great until I got inti my booked hotel-JFK crown plaza at 1 am in the midnight. I supposed it to be a nice hotel which I could have a relax after 16 hours flight. However, I was shocked. The appearance of the hotel was not like a 5 star hotel. It looked quite so normal outside that even made me feel I was in front of a usual apartment rather than hotel. One thing I should mention is that Chinese 5 start hotel always have a luxirious appearance-modern and fashion. ‘Ok’, I told myself,’just bear for one night is ok.’. Unfortunately, when I got to the lobby to check in, I was totally angry. Since my friend  who booked my room is the vip, my room was supposed to be a suite. But, the staff said there was no suite but only the normal room. After being silent for a while, I beared again. However, the following thing made the situation even worse. My king bed was changed into two qween beds. God, I was alone! I argued with the guy but nothing changed.  In china, I never met this kind of situation. Nonetheless, my friends told me that since I arrived quite late, it is the custom that they gived out my room to others, although I paid. As you can guess, I was shocked again!

cultural shock I have met in America

When I first came to Columbus, I found most people here would say hello to others even they did not know each other before. However, in china, we will not greet to strangers on the streets.

Besides, people here are very helpful and friendly. They will hold door for others when getting the doors.

Business Cards – Vistaprint

As we discussed in class, business cards are a great way to differentiate yourself – to make you stand out in comparison to other students.  Most Ohio State students don’t think about business cards until they are ready to graduate…but not us!  You could and should use them throughout your academic career.

Not only does it make you seem memorable, but it also allows you to proactively offer a piece of information about yourself that the other person has.  Also, you can ask if they have one and they will most likely give one back (if they have cards) because they will feel the need to reciprocate – use psychology as a weapon!

A way to get started with business cards is Vistaprint, which offers 250 free business cards – all you pay for is shipping.  Note:  You can also add a picture of yourself, use an OSU logo, and pay a little more to get more backgrounds.

Vistaprint

As for shipping, you can send them to your new dormitory address if you have it, or you can send it to my office at Arps Hall.

Language improving plan for Yi Li(TOM)

For me, I think there are two aspects of language skills that can bring me huge improvements. First is about the false start. Second is about stress and elongate.

In order to have few false starts, two methods may be useful. To begin with, I can answer a lot of jump questions, which will let me be find my own correct way to start. Also, I should speak at least several minutes a time to figure out whether I have fewer false starts when meeting some stops in thinking while speaking.

To enhance the stress and elongate skills, I should follow the coming steps. Firstly, I should record what I said. Then I should write the words down according to the audio. Moreover, I should mark where I should stress and practice over and over again.

So, I should answer the jump question each day and record them done for practicing. Of course, seeing movies is necessary at least twice a week.

This is my draft plan and wish you all good!
