As an M1 or M2, joining one of the professional societies within EM can be a great way to keep a pulse on current topics within the field and can introduce you to the many areas of specialization within EM. There are 5 major societies in emergency medicine: American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA) American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), Council of Residency Directors (CORD). EM Clerkship podcast has a nice short segment (~7 min) that breaks down the basics of each one, but ultimately ACEP/EMRA and SAEM have programming that most directly benefit medical students. Joining EMRA is a great idea for a couple of reasons: 1. It also comes with a membership to ACEP (including their journal, Annals of EM), 2. Medical students receive a great welcome package that includes resources that are helpful for many third-year clerkships. Sometimes, joining these societies early in medical school (M1/M2 year) can be viewed favorably when it comes time to apply for emergency medicine residency, as it shows early interest in the specialty and a willingness to invest and integrate into the growing body of active members. Additionally, SAEM and EMRA both have leadership positions available for medical students that allow students to gain experience in EM at a national level and provide great networking opportunities between peers and faculty. Check out each of these societies via the links below, and strongly consider joining one!
