In February, I attended the annual Educause Learning Initiative (ELI) meeting in New Orleans. I was able to attend thanks to support from:
- my Center for Public Health Practice here at the Ohio State University College of Public Health
- a professional development grant from the good folks at the Office of Distance Education and eLearning (ODEE) and most importantly
- my wife Madeline who agreed to take care of our two trouble makers for 2.5 days — not that anyone was counting
This was my second time attending ELI and my third professional development opportunity with Educause. I find it valuable to get out to a conference or training once a year if resources are available. Attending a conference allows me to get some distance from work and personal life, providing time to reflect, and yes I confess to simply enjoy the silence. Being immersed in learning about the educational technology (#edtech) field with fellow practitioners is exciting and provides perspective on my field and career path which are very important to me. Those who know me on twitter or as call I it “the twitter” as @akhurma know that i do a fair amount of tweeting, favoriting, mentioning, retweeting etc. when I’m at an #edtech event. These tweets are intended to be a digital note or takeaway of an idea I wish to revisit both for me and my followers. This blog post will provide you with my takeaways from ELI 2014.
ELI is great conference to stay up to date on the latest trends in #edtech because it historically corresponds with the release of the annual Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium (NMC).
It's Here. The NMC Horizon Report. Kindly view it here: http://t.co/ZYk8uoIdSh #ELI2014 #edtech

The Horizon Report is a great resource for staying up-to-date on how emerging technologies and instructional approaches are impacting teaching and learning. Our very own Dave Hooker has a great blog post on how OSU is responding to the trends in the report.
Up next are my steals, sights, and stories from #ELI2014 using Storify, a social media curation tool that allows a user to tell a story through embedding social media content along with personal narrative.
