NSF and Interdisciplinary Research

Are you interested in Science, Science Teaching, and the National Science Foundation (NSF)?

We wanted to share with you NSF’s Introduction to Interdisciplinary Research website at https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/additional_resources/interdisciplinary_research/

FYI: NSF defines interdisciplinary research as, “Interdisciplinary research is a mode of research by teams or individuals that integrates information, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from two or more disciplines or bodies of specialized knowledge to advance fundamental understanding or to solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline or area of research practice.”

Their intro site provides insight into the ways that NSF seeks to promote interdisciplinary work.

NSF also has a major initiative around Convergence Research.  Information on convergence can be found here https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/convergence/index.jsp

This type of research involves applying an interdisciplinary research approach to specific and compelling societal problems.  If you get a chance, check out the site.  You can find links to some convergence projects that have already been funded.

Maybe this will inspire you to submit a GSIRI idea?
