Found it. Yellow Poplar has a distinct “cat face” leaf with alternate arrangement.

Tulip trees actually do not have seed pods. Instead, they have cone shaped clusters of samara-like seeds. An individual seed out of the cluster would look very similar to that of a maple seed. To me the “swords” you’re describing sound a lot like catalpa seed pods!
Tulip trees are definitely one to watch change colors right now- they change from that green to a bright, bright yellow. Very beautiful. When I was little I loved to have ‘sword fights’ with the center of their seed pods- its sharp and woody with a handle where it attached to the branch.
