-A member of the Poaceae with an explanation of the characters that you used to determine the family identification
Location: Green Ohio
I identified this plant to be from the Poaceae family. Some characteristics I used to determine this were the long linear leaves; also, the leaves are alternate with entirely smooth margins.
This is a sedge showing an interesting adaptation to wet, ruderal habitats. See in the top of the photo stems that are aerially rooting? They are producing new little plants that when they get heavy enough, the old stem falls over and the new little plant riding at the top roots into the ground. Like the walking fern we saw at Deep Woods.
