New things to try out in CarmenCanvas! (March 2017)

It’s that time again, and Jay Hsiao has summarized cool new things and/or fixes that were added to CarmenCanvas in the past month. If something catches your eye, feel free to come talk to the Office of Teaching & Learning’s instructional designers.

For a complete list, check out the release notes from 3/11 and 4/1.

For Instructors and Students

  • In Discussions, it is now possible to remove a file attached to a reply.
  • In the Dashboard, the “Coming Up” list no longer shows items from unpublished courses
  • The Chat tool is getting a facelift! This particular tool is especially helpful if you have out-of-class synchronous activities, or if you a mix of in-person and online students in the same class. Specifically, the update includes changes to the interface, chat management, and chat history.

Instructors Only

  • In the Rich Content Editor, you can now add placeholder links for new pages using the sidebar; notice that the new pages will not be actually created until you visit them, add content, and then save/publish.
  • SpeedGrader now warns you about unmuting an assignment (i.e. to release feedback and grades).
  • SpeedGrader now shows playback controls for media comments.

Odds and Ends

  • In the Rich Content Editor, it is now possible to add abbreviations for screen readers using the addr HTML tag.
  • In the Rich Content Editor, it is now possible to set videos to play inline by default using the playsinline HTML tag.
  • The delete button in Calendar now works correctly.
  • Import of D2L text entry questions now works correctly.
  • Graded surveys now retain the manually assigned total score rather than sum of individual questions.
