Vision and Action Statements

Vision

My vision for my last two years at Ohio State is that I will only continue to improve in the areas that I have chosen to focus on. I hope to continue with my research and to take it to the next level by organizing my findings and presenting them. I hope to continue to become more involved with the Leadership Board of my scholars group and I hope that I can help our program become even better for the next generation of Scholars students. I see myself continuing to do well in my classes and that my GPA will continue to improve. I see my self forming lasting relationships with my friends in scholars as well as faculty and alumni that will be useful connections for me in the future.

Action

To make my vision a reality I will have to work very hard. I regards to my research I will have to stay very diligent and manage my time well to allow for enough lab time along with my school work. To show my progress I hope to present my research at the STEP Expo as well as the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. As for my scholars group I will also have to manage my time well so that I can complete my duties as a member of the leadership board. To continue to improve my GPA I will have to remain diligent and use my new study habits to really learn the material of my next set of classes. While I will still have a social life and friends, I can not let that distract me from my studies. Otherwise my grades will suffer. To continue the relationships that I have already founded I will need to remember to keep in touch with my friends and the faculty members that I have met. I should keep them up-to-date on what I am doing and ask them for advice in my profession decisions. I will have to carefully manage all of these things to achieve my goals.

My Second Year in Review

My second year began and ended with great optimism. I was excited about all of my classes and I was glad to see my friends again. I was able to take on more as a sophomore than as a freshman. I feel as though this year I really learned how to manage my time better and how to make my schedule work for me. I was very excited to begin writing my research proposal and to become more involved in the research going on in my lab. I feel as though I have made a lot of progress in this area and that I have shown a lot of improvement. I am very excited to see where this research will take me next. I also had the privilege of becoming the Service Chair for my Scholars group which has been a wonderful experience. I have really enjoyed having the responsibilities that come with the position and I hope that I have been doing a good job at providing my scholars group with several fun opportunities to et involved with service.

I also took some of the hardest classes that I have ever taken this year but I feel that I work hard and I am proud of what I was able to achieve both semesters with my grades. I feel that through trial and error I was able to pick out the learning strategies that work best for me and I hope to apply them to my future classes. I am glad that I am done taking these classes and that now I can move on to classes the pertain more to my major and my future career. Over all I believe that my second year was more successful and more enjoyable than my first year at Ohio State, mostly because of the opportunities that I was given by the Scholars program.

My First Year in Review

My first year at The Ohio State University was amazing and full of many surprises! I made friends that I will have for a life time and had experiences of a lifetime. One accomplishment that I am most proud of from this year was gaining a position in Dr. Christin Burd’s cancer research lab. I began in January learning how to pipet and run a PCR and now I am able to genotype and work with the mice independently. I am looking forward to returning in the fall to learn even more and to begin working on different projects. I was also proud of my freshman year academics to some extent. I struggled with chemistry but I feel that I made up for this by earning As in each of my other classes second semester. As far as extracurriculars went, i was very involved with my scholars group this semester. I became a member of he Service Committee and volunteered at several events throughout the semester. I was also excepted into the Honors and Scholars Semester of Service program where I volunteered weekly with the OSU Suicide Prevention Program. Through OSU SPP I help to set up advocacy events in the dorms to increase awareness about suicide prevention and to  hand out resources. I am very thankful for every experience that i have had thus far at The Ohio State University and I can not wait for the next three years.

My First Semester in Review

I began taking classes at The Ohio State University in August of 2016 and I am two weeks from finishing my first semester of college. Just like everyone had told me college has been an adjustment from what I have been used to. Living away from home, more independence, harder classes. All things that changed for me, but I believe that these changes were for the best. I love being at Ohio State and all of the experiences that I have had here. I believe that I have grown so much in these short few months. I think that I have learned a lot about responsibility and maturity since coming here and since being a part of the Biological Science Scholars. BioSci has defiantly encouraged me to be even more involved in my community than I was in High School. The service projects that I have done with BioSci have made the most impact on me as a person. I always had the feeling that I was part of something bigger and really impacting the people around me. As a part of BioSci I fell that the expectations are high for not only my academics but also my activities outside the classroom. I feel as though I am held to a high standard and this is truly a big motivation factor. I have developed better time management and prioritizing skills that have become so crucial to my success in my classes because of the expectations set by Scholars. I feel as though I have also become more outgoing and more driven to go out and gain more experiences because of the expectations. This drive was what allowed me to get a research position in a lab and apply for leadership opportunities. Looking back I feel incredibly lucky that I was accepted into this program because it has provided me with a comprehensive set of expectations that I believe will help me develop into a well rounded individual that is prepared to move on to great things after graduation.
