Vision and Action Statements

Vision

My vision for my last two years at Ohio State is that I will only continue to improve in the areas that I have chosen to focus on. I hope to continue with my research and to take it to the next level by organizing my findings and presenting them. I hope to continue to become more involved with the Leadership Board of my scholars group and I hope that I can help our program become even better for the next generation of Scholars students. I see myself continuing to do well in my classes and that my GPA will continue to improve. I see my self forming lasting relationships with my friends in scholars as well as faculty and alumni that will be useful connections for me in the future.

Action

To make my vision a reality I will have to work very hard. I regards to my research I will have to stay very diligent and manage my time well to allow for enough lab time along with my school work. To show my progress I hope to present my research at the STEP Expo as well as the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. As for my scholars group I will also have to manage my time well so that I can complete my duties as a member of the leadership board. To continue to improve my GPA I will have to remain diligent and use my new study habits to really learn the material of my next set of classes. While I will still have a social life and friends, I can not let that distract me from my studies. Otherwise my grades will suffer. To continue the relationships that I have already founded I will need to remember to keep in touch with my friends and the faculty members that I have met. I should keep them up-to-date on what I am doing and ask them for advice in my profession decisions. I will have to carefully manage all of these things to achieve my goals.

My Second Year in Review

My second year began and ended with great optimism. I was excited about all of my classes and I was glad to see my friends again. I was able to take on more as a sophomore than as a freshman. I feel as though this year I really learned how to manage my time better and how to make my schedule work for me. I was very excited to begin writing my research proposal and to become more involved in the research going on in my lab. I feel as though I have made a lot of progress in this area and that I have shown a lot of improvement. I am very excited to see where this research will take me next. I also had the privilege of becoming the Service Chair for my Scholars group which has been a wonderful experience. I have really enjoyed having the responsibilities that come with the position and I hope that I have been doing a good job at providing my scholars group with several fun opportunities to et involved with service.

I also took some of the hardest classes that I have ever taken this year but I feel that I work hard and I am proud of what I was able to achieve both semesters with my grades. I feel that through trial and error I was able to pick out the learning strategies that work best for me and I hope to apply them to my future classes. I am glad that I am done taking these classes and that now I can move on to classes the pertain more to my major and my future career. Over all I believe that my second year was more successful and more enjoyable than my first year at Ohio State, mostly because of the opportunities that I was given by the Scholars program.

Career Statement

After I graduate form Ohio State I hope to continue my education by going to medical school. After medical school I would like to be a physician, hopefully specializing in pediatrics or oncology.

Organic Chemistry

This is my organic chemistry molecular model kit and I have gotten to know it very well over the last two semesters. I feel really good about the work that I was able to complete in my organic chemistry courses and I am proud of the grades I earned because I worked to hard to achieve them. I think that this model kit deserves to be remembered on my e-portfolio because it was such a big part of my sophomore year at Ohio State and helped me through some of the hardest conceptual classes that I have ever taken.

Abstract

Welcome to my Honors and Scholars e-Portfolio page. Over the last two years in the Biological sciences program I have  been able to accomplish so much. Included on my site are a few overviews of my experiences from my freshman and sophomore years at Ohio State. From the Heart Walk in August 2016 to becoming the Service Chair of the BioSci Scholars, I have recorded most of my memories here.

I began posting on my e-portfolio about where I came from and then I was able to reflect back on my first year. I wrote some posts on my work with the OSU Suicide Prevention program and my research on melanoma with the Comprehensive Cancer Center. I have posted pictures as my artifacts, and detailed my plans for my future career. I have written about how different aspects of my life pertain to the G.O.A.L.S. set by the Honors and Scholars program. Through all of these experiences I feel as though I have grown a lot over the last two years.

Research Project on Melanoma

Here, you can read my full project proposal for the research that I will be doing in the coming two years. I currently volunteer as a research assistant in Dr. Christin Burd’s lab and along with her help and the help of others in the lab I drafted this project proposal. I am very excited to be able to post this on my site because it took a lot of hard work and focus to complete and I am very excited to be able conduct this research this summer and for the years to come. I hope that I can make an impact with this research as well as show my growth as a student and scientist through the results that I am able to produce.

I feel as though I have grown significantly from this experience. I have learned so much about the process of writing a scientific paper including organizing data and creating figures. One of the figures I had to create for this proposal is shown below. Though I am still learning new things every day in the lab I felt as  though this finished proposal really signifies how far i have come in my first year of research.

OSU Suicide Prevention Program

This semester through the Honors and Scholars Semester of Service program I volunteered weekly with the OSU Suicide Prevention program. The aim of this program is to educate and provide resources for the prevention of suicides on campus and as a volunteer my projects was to come up with out reach programs for the dorms on campus. One of the projects that my fellow volunteers and I put on was call Mental Health and Movies. We showed the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower and then had a discussion about its representation of suicide and explained the R.E.A.C.H. trainings provided b the university. The Semester of Service program was an essential part of reaching one of my goals which is to be involved in my community through service. this program was a great way to stay engaged on campus for a whole semester and the final project, the Reach 5k (pictured above) was an amazing way to conclude my service with the program. I hope that this service experience will help prepare me for my future career goals in health care.

My First Year in Review

My first year at The Ohio State University was amazing and full of many surprises! I made friends that I will have for a life time and had experiences of a lifetime. One accomplishment that I am most proud of from this year was gaining a position in Dr. Christin Burd’s cancer research lab. I began in January learning how to pipet and run a PCR and now I am able to genotype and work with the mice independently. I am looking forward to returning in the fall to learn even more and to begin working on different projects. I was also proud of my freshman year academics to some extent. I struggled with chemistry but I feel that I made up for this by earning As in each of my other classes second semester. As far as extracurriculars went, i was very involved with my scholars group this semester. I became a member of he Service Committee and volunteered at several events throughout the semester. I was also excepted into the Honors and Scholars Semester of Service program where I volunteered weekly with the OSU Suicide Prevention Program. Through OSU SPP I help to set up advocacy events in the dorms to increase awareness about suicide prevention and to  hand out resources. I am very thankful for every experience that i have had thus far at The Ohio State University and I can not wait for the next three years.

Welcome to my e-Portfolio

Welcome to my e-portfolio. This is a website that contains various areas of information about me, my goals, and my plans for the future. The About Me section details where I came from and what I am currently doing and studying. The Artifacts tab is where examples of my accomplishments are kept and explained. Under the Career tab I detail my plans for after my undergraduate and graduate studies. In the G.O.A.L.S. section I define this acronym and explain how during my time at Ohio State I strive to achieve each pillar. My year in review section will be completed at the end of each academic year to summarize the information from each of the previous categories.

How did I get here?

I was born and raised in Canton, Ohio before I moved to Columbus to study at The Ohio State University . I am very excited to be at Ohio State and for all of the opportunities offered here. My goals for the future are to continue on to medical school after four years here. My favorite class in high school was AP Biology because of the amazing teacher that I had. He defiantly helped me discover a passion for science and that is when I decided that I wanted to go into medicine in the future. I chose to come to Ohio State, not only for the amazing academics and research opportunities, but also for the community and I have already made some amazing friends! I love how I am challenged so much by every class that I take here at Ohio State and I know that they will prepare me so well for my future ambitions.
