Patient Education

Patient Education FAQs (Do NOT include this in your blog post, this is for your reference only!)

  1. What should I include in my patient education video?

You should include:
-Your suspected diagnosis with a description of the disease
-Description of how you will confirm your suspected diagnosis
-2-3 important education pieces for how the patient can participate in his/her care (e.g. sun protection, skin checks, etc.)

Please be sure to talk in “lay terms”- do not use medical jargon that a patient may not understand, or and clearly explain any terms that may be confusing.

You also want to ensure that you use a visual aid to explain the disease process to the patient- a picture, drawing, or diagram can all be useful visual aids to consider. The aid must add to the overall quality of the eduation. (Please note, the example video would NOT have gotten a 100% grade as the visual aid is missing!)

  1. How long should my video be?

Your patient education video should be 2-3 minutes long and not contain extraneous information.

  1. Do we need to include a second comment that explains what we said and why we said it?

No, you do not. You only need your first comment.

  1. Do you want only one person in our group to record the patient explanation, or do we all need to put our own version of our patient explanation on our blog page?’

Your group may decide who speaks on each Voicethread piece, including the patient education. Only one explanation is needed.

  1. Do I have to use my webcam to record my headshot while I’m speaking, instead of a slide?

Yes. You will only receive full points for an actual videotaped recording of a provider giving education to a patient.  However, you may also choose to talk directly to the camera as you provide education, if you are unable to find an actor to serve as your “patient”.  If you choose this option, please make sure to maintain eye contact, to have a visual aid that is clearly visible, and to remain professional in dress and manner.
