Entrepreneur Skill Building Opportunity

Do you know any youth that are interested in taking over the family farm, starting their own farm, or owning their own business in the agriscience industry? Please pass on attached flyer to anyone that is interested in attending Agricultural Entrepreneurship Camp on the weekend of September 24-26. Open to all youth that are in high school. Registration is now open and can be found here: http://go.osu.edu/exploreagcamp. This camp is a partnership between Explore Ag, Lucas County Extension, Franklin County Extension, Hocking College, Grow Next Gen, Venture Lab, and Young Entrepreneur Institute.

Junior Fair Events Reminder

Saturday, August 21 at the fairgrounds by last name:

8:00 – 9:30am last name T-Z

10:00 – 11:30am last name M-S

12:00 – 1:30pm last name F-L

2:00 – 3:30pm last name A-E

**Please notify the office if you have dropped a project so we aren’t waiting for you at Skillathon.** You must participate in Skillathon to be eligible to exhibit at the Morgan County Fair. Call prior to August 21 to schedule make-up if you cannot attend. Make-up does not count
towards Skillathon awards or Premiere Exhibitor. Your entry from must still be turned in by August 21 with an email address to send the online make up information.

ALSO NOTE:

  1. Livestock Sale Photos:
    • Must bring one printed photo per animal to the Extension Office prior to the fair or to the Junior Fair office during the fair. All photos must be turned in by Friday, September 10th at the latest. Photos should be in horizontal format (side to side orientation). Photo should include the animal and youth. Photos will be used on the Buyer “thank you” cards that handed out during the sale.
  2. If unable to bring animal to the fair, youth must create an educational poster to display in the Jr. Fair Building:
    • Poster cannot just be a photo of the animal. POSTER MUST TEACH US SOMETHING (How to feed, groom or handle your animal, a diagram labeling the parts of the animal, etc.) Poster must include photos of the animal and youth member, youth name and 4-H club or FFA Chapter.
  3. Winning 4-H Plans
    1. Making 4-H accessible for all! An adjustment or change to the site, project, and/or event to make it more supportive for the youth. OSU Extension is responsible for making reasonable adjustments to provide an opportunity for all youth. Studying for Skillathon

Livestock skillathons are right around the corner!

If you have not already seen or heard of the study guides, here is where you can find a digital copy of them!

There are 3 stations to complete. One will focus on your project record book and drug use notification form practice, another will focus on quality assurance and project specific questions, and lastly, there is a station on an activity topic explained in the study guide.

Volunteers Needed

We need some volunteers for Saturday, August 21 for livestock skillathons. There are two different ways to donate your time: half a day or all day. Half day shifts are either in the morning (8am – Noon) or afternoon (Noon – 4pm). If you have a preference, there are 3 different stations to volunteer for: project record book/Quality Assurance/Drug Use Notification Form, project interview, or the species activity station.

  4. Information about Premier Market Exhibitor:
    1. The award was designed to give youth that may not have the “best” animal a chance to compete for an award and be recognized in the sale. The award is based on the highest score of the combined skillathon, showmanship and market classes. Each category can be worth up to 100 points. For skillathon, it is the final score; for showmanship, it is 100 for first; 98 for second; 96 for third; down to 90 points. Previous Showman of Showman receive 100 points. Market classes work the same way. 100 for first; 98 for second down to 90 for sixth. In the event of a tie, the skillathon is the first tiebreaker, showmanship is second and market score is third. A couple years ago, we had a tie all the way through the tiebreakers, so both got the award. The final caveat we have is if an exhibitor has two animals in the same category (i.e. two market hogs) that have the final identical score, the animal that places highest in the sale order will receive the recognition on the sale bill.

Wrap Up from Project Judging

What a great day to see all the hard work from 4-H projects displayed in front of judges! We were able to capture some photos of the youth to share with you. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers to help judge, Senior Fair Board for use of the fairgrounds, and OSU Extension staff for helping facilitate and prepare for this event!
