2019 College Aspire

COLLEGE ASPIRE summer workshops for community youth offer hands-on, technology-based learning on a college campus. Available to youth ages 10-18, these FREE WORKSHOPS are offered June 10 – 14. Classes are available at all four Central Ohio Technical College (COTC)  campuses: Newark, Coshocton, Knox & Pataskala!

Students – you choose the workshops that interest YOU most! In addition, for the convenience of you and your parent or guardian, workshops take place daily Monday-Friday, from either 9 a.m. to noon, or  1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Plus, one student in each workshop will be selected as the Shooting Star and will be awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to apply toward your future education at Central Ohio Technical College! The Shooting Star is one who demonstrates a passion for learning, an eagerness to engage in the subject matter, and enthusiasm for furthering his or her education. (NOTE: In order to receive this institutional scholarship, students must enroll at least six credit hours per semester at COTC.)

 And that’s not all! Students and their families are invited to attend the CollegeASPIRE Showcase on Saturday, June 15 , 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the John Gilbert Reese Center on the Newark campus of COTC. This is an exciting event you don’t want to miss!

Free Transporation is also available within 10 miles of workshops located at the Knox, Coshocton and Pataskala campuses. (NOTE: Participants using the transportation option will be contacted by a staff member the week prior to the beginning of workshops alerting you of pick-up and drop-off times and locations.)

Workshops fill fast. Applications are due by May 20, 2019.

Newark Campus

Now We’re Cooking

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon |  Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Make your summer sizzle as you experience life as a chef for a week. Discover the foodie in you through this hands-on, creative cooking workshop. Ah! Now you’re cooking!

Brace Yourself While Bracing that Bridge!

  • Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Think you’ve got what it takes to design the sturdiest structure and unbreakable bridges? Take your design skills to the breaking point… literally! Explore the engineering behind the wonderful world of building and construction, using super-fun software and recognizable materials to design and test bridges and structures. Then, brace yourself in the ultimate “bridge smasher” showdown at the College ASPIRE Showcase!

PhotoBOMB, Photoshop and Pure PhotoFun!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Attention shutterbugs! Let’s put the FUN in the FUNdamentals of digital photography! From creative camera techniques to fabulous photo enhancements in Photoshop, you will also learn how to use SLR (single lens reflex) cameras and attempt the mastery of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Say cheese!

What’s Up with Worms?

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon
  • Learn about a member of nature’s own clean-up crew – earthworms!  We will discuss composting and natural cycles; looking at our household waste (especially food waste) and what happens to our waste material after it leaves our homes.  Participants will get up-close and personal with earthworms; learning what they eat, where they live, and why they are important to the environment.  This is a perfect opportunity for those interested in the great outdoors, the environment, and nature study, as well as those interested in social and political sciences.

Crime Scene Camp

  • Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • From crime to capture, learn the reality behind the Forensic Science depicted in such television dramas as CSI, CSI New York, and NCIS. Fingerprinting, DNA, processing the scene and collecting the evidence… it all leads to – “Who, What, When, and How!”

Knox Campus

Medical Madness

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon |  Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Well beyond “putting a Band-Aid on a boo-boo,” this workshop gives you a glimpse into the life of a first-responder. Learn the how-to and what-to-do steps if you are the first person on the scene or witness to an accident. Plus, enhance your emergency response skills and earn your First Aid and CPR Certifications.

Art to Slay a Thousand Words

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon |  Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • They say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Learn to create art that tells an exciting story and takes imagination on an adventure. Through color and concept, you will learn to make your drawings more dynamic with the application of colors that convey emotion. Turn your art into a never-ending story.

The Greatest Showman’s Manager

  • Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • From page to stage, learn about the behind-the-scenes work required to bring a show to life on stage. How many times does Alexander Hamilton change his costumes in Hamilton, and who assists? There are 35 characters in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, so how do you schedule all the actors for rehearsal? Who is going to look after Toto backstage during Wizard of Oz?  This workshop in stage management will teach you the ins and outs of putting on a theatrical performance. With an emphasis on theatre and stage management, you will participate in detail-oriented and communication-based exercises, grounded in real-life scenarios in the theatre industry. Experience what it takes to be the manager of the showmen and show-women!

Ready, Set, Build!

  • Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • From Willy Wonka’s colorful factory, to the topsy-turvy kingdom of Alice in Wonderland, to The Addams Family’s eccentric mansion, stage scenography creates a three-dimensional story by transporting the fantastic world of fiction into reality. Learn from an experienced set design and carpentry duo in this hands-on stage scenography workshop. You will familiarize yourself with both aesthetic and practical set-design principles; learn how to read a blueprint; and work with carpentry tools to build set pieces. Be ready, and get set to build!

Coshocton Campus

Robo-Techno

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon |  Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Do you have the next big idea? Imagination is the key to innovation as you plan for the future, so kick-start your career in robotics. Learn how technology is changing the future, and how robotics are powering the technological world around us.

Nursing: A Work of Heart!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Help people heal. Know how to heat things up when a cold sets in. Check your pulse as you work under the cuff of pressure! Nurses are superheroes in healthcare, so reach for those stethoscopes! It’s time to learn the skills it takes to save lives!

Power Up & Go Green!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Explore the energy sources used to produce electricity. Younger students will focus on designing and building wind turbines, and older students will focus on wiring circuits to build a display to be powered by an energy bike. You’ll be powered up when you witness how much electricity you generate. This engineering workshop is electrifying!

Stop! Drop! Roll!

  • Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected, and learn to prevent many fire emergencies from occurring… or respond quickly to them when they do! Fire safety and prevention are the priorities for this workshop with hands-on activities including: First Aid, CPR, Fire Prevention, and more. Race to the scene as you are introduced to an exciting career in public safety!

Pataskala Campus

Animation Creation!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Have you ever wanted to jump into the video game? Now you can learn the tips and tricks of animation as you design your very own interactive, never-ending story! Build your own computer games, animations, and interactive stories… no experience necessary! It’s where innovation and imagination come to life through animation!

Math Magic: It’s all a Game of Math!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Go on a mathematical adventure and experience, investigate, discover, and explore the wonderful world of mathematics through fun and games from around the world! Discover the hidden math in games and puzzles by playing them! Here’s just how fun math can be…

    Q: Why did the girl wear glasses during math class? A: Because it improves di-vison.

Encore: An EPIC Performance!

  • Ages 10-13, 9:00 a.m. – noon | Ages 14-18, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Learn to be EPIC as you develop your Expression, Performance, Imagination, and Communication skills! This workshop will bring out and empower the performer in you – boosting your confidence as you engage in a variety of activities. Music will move you… literally! And the theatre arts will come to life as you take a bow!

Experience Ohio State for a Day

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to go to Ohio State in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences?  Here’s your chance to find out.  Visit Ohio State and shadow a current student.  Eat lunch on campus and meet experts in your area of interest.

Visits start at 8:30 a.m. and end around 3:00 p.m.  They schedule personalized visits on most weekdays when classes are in session. Visits are free for students and guests, with the exception of parking.
