2018 Knox County Quilt Show

This is a great opportunity for youth who are enrolled in one of the 4-H quilting projects.  Youth under 18 years of age can enroll their own quilt project in the Knox County Quilt Show that will be held August 10-12 in Hunter Hall on Main Street in Mount Vernon.  The top youth winner will be awarded a new Janome sewing machine.

Ohio Teen Leadership Council

Greetings!

Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) applications for the 2018-2019 year are now available!  Please let any interested individual know, so they may apply!  Please note, because it is only a one year term, current TLC members who wish to continue their service must re-apply.

“Applications and more information to be an Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC. Please note applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation) are due (not postmarked; received!) by Friday, August 10, 2018.”

Here are some highlights about the responsibilities of the council:

  • Age: Individuals must be 14-18 as of January 1 the year of application to apply for council member, committee member, committee chair, and officer.
  • Number of Meetings/Events: See the program structure outline on the application for specific numbers of meetings and events. Members are required to attend at least 75% of meetings and events.
    • Working Events: Members are required to work a number of statewide events at the Ohio State Fair, and elsewhere throughout the state (Farm Science Review, Legislative Luncheon, etc.).  Each level of membership differs in the number of events that are required.  See the program structure for more information.
  • Location of meetings: Meetings are typically held at the Ohio 4-H Center in Columbus, Ohio, but there are occasionally instances when they are held elsewhere due to events on Ohio State’s Campus.  In these instances, meetings may be held at locations close to campus.  Refer to the application for the locations for the 2018-2019 year.  Members will be notified prior to the location change.
  • Additional Opportunities: Depending on the level of involvement, council members have the option to apply for additional opportunities including the National 4-H Conference, Ohio 4-H Foundation Board, and other opportunities that may arise.

Applications and more information for this group are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC.  Please note applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation) are due (not postmarked; received!) by Friday, August 10, 2018.  We recognize this falls during some county fairs, so encourage teens to apply early!  We will accept applications as early as today! :o)  The term for selected individuals will be September 1, 2018-August 31, 2019.

If you have questions on this opportunity, please let Kayla (oberstadt.1@osu.edu) or Hannah (epley.24@osu.edu) know.

2018 Clover Bucket Challenge Splash Machine

I am looking for clubs who wish to staff a shift during the fair for the Clover Bucket Challenge Splash Machine (east of the booth building). Formerly a dunk tank which held 900 gallons, the machine has been re-engineered to serve as a splash machine. A volunteer sits on a chair with a bucket containing ten (10) gallons of water over their head. When the thrown softball hits its target, the bucket tilts forward and provides a cool shower for the sitter. The machine automatically refills the bucket in about ten (10) seconds and the next ball can be thrown. Balls are 50 cents or three (3) for a dollar.

The machine will be in operation Sunday, July 22 through Friday, July 27. Shifts are 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. each day.

Contact Larry Hall 740-627-0493 to volunteer as a club. It is a lot of fun.

Booth Patrol & Pop Stand Schedules

Booth Patrol – 2018 Booth Patrol Schedule-1rhiivc

All clubs that are constructing a booth this year have been assigned or have chosen their preferable booth patrol time.  Clubs that have a significant amount of projects that are being displayed in the miscellaneous booth have also been assigned a time or volunteered their services.  If your club cannot fulfill the time that is assigned it is up to you to find a club to switch with you.

Pop Stand – 2018 Pop Stand Schedule-2j7t8zp

Thank you to all of the clubs that have signed up to help the Grange with their pop stand and earn a little money for your club treasury.  The shifts are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to close (at least 10 p.m. but maybe until 11 p.m.).  It all depends on the main events at the grandstand that evening.

Help Needed during the 2018 Ohio State Fair

Dear Ohio 4-H Supporter,

The Ohio State Fair is quickly approaching, and we hope you will consider volunteering as a skillathon facilitator. The skillathons are the largest program we coordinate at the state fair with more than 1,300 youth participating in nine species skillathons last year. The success of the program is dependent upon the generous time provided by you – our volunteer facilitators!

We hope you might assist us with one or more of the skillathons. The skillathon species include: beef, sheep, swine, dairy, horse, goat, poultry, dog, and rabbit. Please click on the following link and complete the survey to indicate your availability and interest: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eDq6ouGJTxT4qQR

Volunteers for the skillathons are responsible for facilitating a station. A station requires youth to perform a series of tasks to test their knowledge about a subject related to the species. Facilitators are not required to have broad experience or knowledge about the species; however, we are seeking volunteers who enjoy working with youth from ages 8/9 to 18 years old and have some knowledge about animals.

If you agree to volunteer, we will send a follow-up letter in July with parking and admission passes, as well as additional facilitator information.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 614.247.8305 (office) or simply reply to this email. Thank you for considering.

Sincerely,

Dustin Homan

Program Manager, 4-H Special Projects
