Reflectance sensors are designed to read reflectance of light through voltage changes and mark the non-reflective surfaces single pass as a ‘mark’, where 8 marks (4 voltage changes for each sensor) determines one full wheel rotation. Marks are a way of measuring how much distance the AEV traversed, where 1 mark is about 0.4875 inches.
The team decided to not use the reflectance sensors due to the inconsistencies of it’s measurements and the additional cost to the AEV.
