Executive Summary

I have been talked about the video games in my paper. Video games got developed with the computer technology. More and more people choose to play the video games for fun. So in my topic, I specifically talked about the benefits and harms of video games. It has lots of benefits, like help people relax and be the educational tool. However, it has the negative aspect, especially for the youth and kids.

In conclusion, I think people should treat the game like the other hobbies. Some people love playing basketball, some people love swimming, and some people born to love games. That’s not a bad thing. And the game is not important, no matter you win or lose, good or bad, just take it easy. After that, the most important thing of playing video games is to control yourself. When you have free time, do whatever you want. But when you are busy, do what should you do.

My favorite resource is the 14 benefits and harms of video games.

It used lots of experiments and examples to proved the benefits and harms of games, furthermore, it let me know how to explain my point. Additionally, some opinion of the writer is inspired me a lot.

Survive offline, live online

In the modern society people are more and more rely the internet. Internet could give people lots of conviniences. The social media, movies, games and other entertainments. That help people to release their pressure and expand their friend circle. Today, I want to discuss about how many people play game, why they play it, the benefits and harms of it and how many time they played games.

  • What is game

A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool.[1] Games are distinct from work, which is usually carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more often an expression of aesthetic or ideological elements. However, the distinction is not clear-cut, and many games are also considered to be work (such as professional players of spectator sports or games) or art (such as jigsaw puzzles or games involving an artistic layout such as Mahjongsolitaire, or some video games). At recently, game are more likely refers to video games. In my interview, about 80 percent people played video game before. They mostly are teenagers. Only some adult don’t play games. But for most adult, they played games before. And when they start work, they have no time to play it.Video games are ingrained in our culture,” said ESA president and CEO Michael Gallagher. “Driven by some of the most innovative minds in the tech sector, our industry’s unprecedented leaps in software and hardware engages and inspires our diverse global audience. Our artists and creators continue to push the entertainment envelope, ensuring that our industry will maintain its upward trajectory for years to come.” There are some statistics: 84 percent of parents are aware of the ESRB rating system. 69 percent of parents regularly check ratings before buying games. 90 percent of parents say their kids can only buy or rent games with their parental consent. 79% of parents place time limits on video game playing. So in conclusion, people love games, games influenced people.

Video games have a lot of kinds. For instance, First Person Shooter games. A lot of players love to play First Person Shooter games. In the interviews. First Person Shooter games is the most popular game category in students. My friend Anthony was a professional player in Counter strike: global offensive. He make his hobby becomes his career. And the other kind of games, Arcade gamesComputer gamesConsole gamesHandheld gamesMobile games and so on. In this time, people need diversity kind of games.

  • why do people love game

First of all, games are very interesting. It maybe have a good story, great back ground music, beautiful picture or cool control system. But one thing is certainly. Games are extremely interesting, and that can appeal lots of people. When people play video games, they could get some fun. That is very important for modern people.

Second of all, players can use games reduce their pressure. While some games are thought to induce stress—especially when you see your character struck down for the umpteenth time—the opposite can be true. A major study that tracked players over six months and measured heart rate found that certain titles reduced the adrenaline response by over 50 percent.

Thirdly, players can make some friends at games, especially online games. Gamers are sometimes stigmatized as being too insulated, but the opposite is actually true. The rise of multi-player experiences online has given way to a new form of socializing in which players work together to solve problems. But studies have shown games can also be the catalyst for friends to gather in person: roughly 70 percent of all players play with friends at least some of the time.

Finally, that could widen people’s horizon. “Don’t sit too close to the television” used to be a common parental refrain without a lot of science to back it up. Instead, scientists are discovering games in moderation may actually improve—not strain—your vision. In one study, 10 weeks of play was associated with a greater ability to discern between different shades of grey. Another had participants try to play games using only their “lazy” eye, with the “good” one obscured. Those players showed significant, sometimes normalized improvement in the affected eye.

  • the negative thing about games

Even though games have so many benefits like above, parents and teachers are not like their students to play games. For example, Anthony is a professional player in electronic sports, in other word, video game. He has pretty good incomes. Flexible schedule and the interests of the job also pretty good. But his parents and professors totally disagree with his choice. They think professional player is not a “official” job. People will laugh about that. But actually, e-sports player is more like the athlete. They training together, fight for honor and champion, have official league. But people don’t accept that.

On the other hand, indeed, games have some negative things. Especially for teenagers or students, they don’t have incomes and they can’t totally control themselves.

Most of the bad effects of video games are blamed on the violence they contain.  Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and decreased pro-social helping, according to a scientific study (Anderson & Bushman, 2001).  Also according to Dmitri A. Christakis of the Seattle Children’s Research Institute, those who watch a lot of simulated violence, such as those in video games, can become immune to it, more inclined to act violently themselves, and are less likely to behave emphatically. The effect of video game violence in kids is worsened by the games’ interactive nature.  In many games, kids are rewarded for being more violent.  The act of violence is done repeatedly.  The child is in control of the violence and experiences the violence in his own eyes (killings, kicking, stabbing and shooting).  This active participation, repetition and reward are effective tools for learning behavior.  Indeed, many studies seem to indicate that violent video games may be related to aggressive behavior (such as Anderson & Dill, 2000; Gentile, Lynch & Walsh, 2004).  However, the evidence is not consistent and this issue is far from settled.

Further more, A study by the Minneapolis-based National Institute for Media and the Family suggests that video games can be addictive for kids, and that the kids’ addiction to video games increases their depression and anxiety levels. Addicted kids also exhibit social phobias. Not surprisingly, kids addicted to video games see their school performance suffer. Kids spending too much time playing video games may exhibit impulsive behavior and have attention problems. This is according to a new study published in the February 2012 issue of the Journal of Psychology and Popular Media Culture. For the study, attention problems were defined as difficulty engaging in or sustaining behavior to reach a goal.

In conclusion, people born to love games, it’s interesting and beautiful. So that’s why so many people select to often play games. However, every coins have two sides. Games truly harmed lots of students and teenagers. So we need to treat games like other hobbies. Control ourselves, have a good schedule. Arrange the game time fittable.

Thinking about Scott’s presentation

The topic is very important because the topic is the main idea and essence of a good passage. When people read an essay, they always read the topic at first. And the topic could help us to write paper easier. His material specifically talked about that.  His opinion and good experiences could help us a lot.
