Non-IA semester 2

On Saturday, February 2, 2018, I attended the Korean culture night at the Ohio Union. In total there were ten acts that performed. The first was a traditional Fan Dance. It was performed by OSU students and showed a traditional Korean dance. Next there was the Samulnori which was a group of older adults who performed songs using percussion instruments. I was very impressed with the passion of the performers. You could tell in their faces that they were having a really good time and were very excited to be performing. Next was a younger boy and girl who performed an acoustic version of a song in Korean quite beautifully. For a change of pace, the next group displayed their Taekwondo skills. They performed a set routine together as a group at the beginning and then showed off their individual skills. These individual acts included board breaking, self defense acts and bow staff wielding skills. This performance was quite interesting to read about in the pamphlet because I learned some about the history of Taekwondo. First off, I didn’t realize that Taekwondo was Korean. I also didn’t realize that it was two thousand years old. The next performance was once again quite different. It was a group of break dancers known as HAY, Hungry Asian Youngtaz. This group performed individual break dances and was also exceptionally impressive and entertaining. Next to perform was up and coming YouTube star, Hypbeats. The mixture of piano, violin and K-pop music was an interesting and new concept. The violinist’s skills were very impressive and beautiful. The Avengers were next to take the stage. This singing and dancing group of masked men was some what underwhelming to me. While I admire their courage and passion, I was not as impressed with them as I was with the other singers and dancers that performed that evening. For example, the next group to perform was Queen of Aces. They are an all women, all Ohio State student dance team that was founded in 2013. As time has progressed, they have had members graduate and add new members. I was very surprised and happy to learn that one of my fellow high school alumni was a member of this group! While waiting for the event to start, I saw her family and went up to talk to them. She and I have known each other since we were in third grade and I knew she had a passion for Korean culture and dance, as she is from Korea. I was very impressed with their performance not only for their creative dancing abilities but also for their abilities to change clothes so quickly. They had over four different outfits that they wore throughout the performance and each change happened very quickly. Overall, the evening was very interesting and entertaining. I thought it was a good mix of traditional Korean culture and modern Korean culture with a twist. Even though the event lasted about three hours, it went by very quickly because it was very entertaining and interesting.
