e-learning: the importance to set goals

Reflection Paper

As a biology major student, I physically want to become an expert in biomedical aspects. But ideally, being an expert would be an ultimate goal for my whole life. According to Cuseo(2010), successful people would diligently do all the small things and make small decisions in order to reaching big accomplishment in the long run. Therefore, I would split my ‘professional self’ into two parts: academic and spiritual to think about and discuss.

Academically, being an expert would face plenty of challenges such as hardworking and career difficulties. For the first issue, I would use Smart Steps that I learnt from Chastain(2012) to better allocate my studying time. When studying, I would also make short-term goals for my staged victory. For example, using ‘Measurable’ step, I could determine my working progress during work completion and making sure the exact time I need to finish each of my short-term goal according to ‘Time-Based achievement’ step. It’s a good way to exercise my memory as well because I will record plenty of things on my schedule and often review each of them. For the second problem, I was already faced with one and made a huge decision for my future career. When applying university, I chose the major Biology because I want to be a doctor in the future. Unfortunately, I found out I couldn’t do that because of identity. Therefore, I changed my thought after several days thinking. Though I couldn’t be a doctor in the hospital, I could still be a doctor in my interested aspect. I know there will be more tough decisions in the future waiting for me, but I believe I could find my own way during my physical and mental growth in the university.

Spiritually, being an expert would need to develop other virtues as well as brilliant academic progress. Patience and Perfectionism are two necessary qualities to be successful. Before the class, I used to be a careless and perfunctory learner. Caring only quantities not qualities of my works I have done, which lead to some bad grades in my previous studying. After responding the self-assessment survey, I really want to change my studying attitude because I find out I could never become a person I would like to be in the future with my previous attitudes. Problem could always be solved as long as I realizing them. I would start to set some studying goals according to my class schedule to study more efficiently to improve my GPA. In the future, I believe I would graduate with a satisfied resume and rich knowledge to be an expert in my career.

Ways to Achieve Your Goals in the New Year

e-learning: how to improve learning efficiency

We all need to make time schedule to better plan our studying and relaxing time, making our life going on the right track. As well as making short time goals in order to getting the ultimate goal at the end, what else can we do? According to Landry (2018), he just mentioned 6 useful strategies to manage studying time and one of them is creating a learning environment without distractions. I never consider where is the right place to study before I viewing this reading. I always do my homework on my bed, on the bend nearby the Mirror lake even in the driving car. As a result, there’s always something to interrupt me to truly immersed in learning such as the sight of nature or the images on the  Instagram. Therefore, my studying efficiency is so low to keep a good grade even though I finish all the homework. A better environment would create an atmosphere of learning so we could generate more motivation to study without being distracting. Sitting in a silent place and blocking the phone for a while to create an atmosphere to study, the studying efficiency would be improved with no interruptions from the outer place and internet, it would be possible to acquire much more knowledge in a shorter time when comparing to the past. In a word, I think it’s a really practical tip for all of us to improving our studying schedule.

e-learning: strategies for e-learning

Reflection Paper

According to Globokar (2010), plenty of students who are unfamiliar with online-learning would always have some misunderstanding opinions towards it. For example, thinking e-learning would be easier or take less time than face to face learning. Though not wanting to admit it, I used to have such fluke mind so that I’m not hesitate to sign up for online class without in-depth understanding what online class is. Therefore, I suffered from the fallout and got my first C+ grade in my undergraduate life!

However, it doesn’t mean that we couldn’t be successful during online learning. Littlefiled (2019) introduced lots of useful strategies such as embracing syllabus, knowing how to get help and so on. We would be in a weak position if we don’t know how does the grading system of the class work. The best way is familiar with the syllabus at the beginning of the class. I used to have an online writing class and I don’t know the late submission grading is different from what I used to see in the face to face class. Therefore, I submitted 15% paper late for about two days and got a 0 while grading. I thought it would be only 10% dropped but this class just had a different grading rules, differing with what I thought. I would have avoided this stupid mistake as long as I see the syllabus. What’s more, communicating with our professors on time is really necessary as well. Differing with online-studying, we can always ask for help when we face with difficulties because we could find our professor or classmates at once to discuss it. When we are learning online, we would easily have some puzzles and don’t know who can talk about with. E-mailing at this time would be really helpful to seek the most professional help from our professors. It would be so much better to ask for help even for some ‘stupid’ questions and get good grade than pretending knowing everything correctly and failed for the class.

As a student in OSU, our university also offers fantastic resources for us to better doing our work. The resource I used the most is OSU library, it is a website just like a real library. It contains plenty of researches, papers, magazines and so on for students to explore information they what to enrich their works. For me, I used to do my Biology poster by searching associated cases with my topic and it helped me a lot.

In a word, we should trust ourselves and be motivated to succeed in online-learning. Just make sure we have a good understanding towards what online-learning is and use effective strategies or resources to stand out from others.
