Reflection Paper
As a biology major student, I physically want to become an expert in biomedical aspects. But ideally, being an expert would be an ultimate goal for my whole life. According to Cuseo(2010), successful people would diligently do all the small things and make small decisions in order to reaching big accomplishment in the long run. Therefore, I would split my ‘professional self’ into two parts: academic and spiritual to think about and discuss.
Academically, being an expert would face plenty of challenges such as hardworking and career difficulties. For the first issue, I would use Smart Steps that I learnt from Chastain(2012) to better allocate my studying time. When studying, I would also make short-term goals for my staged victory. For example, using ‘Measurable’ step, I could determine my working progress during work completion and making sure the exact time I need to finish each of my short-term goal according to ‘Time-Based achievement’ step. It’s a good way to exercise my memory as well because I will record plenty of things on my schedule and often review each of them. For the second problem, I was already faced with one and made a huge decision for my future career. When applying university, I chose the major Biology because I want to be a doctor in the future. Unfortunately, I found out I couldn’t do that because of identity. Therefore, I changed my thought after several days thinking. Though I couldn’t be a doctor in the hospital, I could still be a doctor in my interested aspect. I know there will be more tough decisions in the future waiting for me, but I believe I could find my own way during my physical and mental growth in the university.
Spiritually, being an expert would need to develop other virtues as well as brilliant academic progress. Patience and Perfectionism are two necessary qualities to be successful. Before the class, I used to be a careless and perfunctory learner. Caring only quantities not qualities of my works I have done, which lead to some bad grades in my previous studying. After responding the self-assessment survey, I really want to change my studying attitude because I find out I could never become a person I would like to be in the future with my previous attitudes. Problem could always be solved as long as I realizing them. I would start to set some studying goals according to my class schedule to study more efficiently to improve my GPA. In the future, I believe I would graduate with a satisfied resume and rich knowledge to be an expert in my career.
