G.O.A.L.S. Response

Global Awareness

Awareness is becoming increasingly important in a globalizing world. In my time at Ohio State, I will strive to increase my global awareness. First off, I will learn about other cultures. To accomplish this, I will take classes pertaining to Europe and Asia, in an effort to better understand the varying dynamics of our world. This will also give me more knowledge of foreign cultures, which will help me relate to those with histories different from mine. Additionally, the world seems to be becoming a melting pot in and of itself, and language is very important. I will take advantage of Ohio State’s foreign language department and become proficient in another language. This will give me an advantage in our melting pot of a world where not all speak English and have my same background.

Original Inquiry

As a biochemistry major, inquiry is extremely important to my success. In a field like finance or economics, while inquiry may be innovative or helpful, one can be successful simply by applying their skills and new knowledge to their post-baccalaureate job. In biochemistry or chemistry, however, I don’t believe this same approach would be prudent. A large part of the biochemical world is research, there is still a wealth of scientific knowledge waiting to be discovered. For this reason, I am passionate that I should spend a significant amount of time doing research here at Ohio State. I plan on utilizing Ohio State’s research office to find research that will be of interest to me. This will include time spent in the lab, but also outside of it. I will also complete field work, such as at the Stone Laboratory.

Academic Enrichment

In my high school, we were essentially given no options for what classes to take. There were always the ‘state required’ classes filling up most of my schedule, leaving very little room for me to choose classes that interested me. Here at Ohio State, however, I am very excited for the freedom the academic plan gives me. While I am passionate about my major and taking my major classes, I am also looking forward to leaving my comfort zone in other classes. I am finally being given some latitude in my schedule, and I plan on taking advantage of it. Using this latitude, I will develop a course-load during my time here that is rigorous in my field, but also stimulating in other areas of study.

Leadership Development

Leadership is important to me as an honors student, but it will also be important to me in my professional life. All of my idols and role models posses strong leadership skills. I believe that they are integral to being successful today. My father, for example, is a small business owner. While he doesn’t possess a college degree, his leadership skills allowed him to carve his own path to success. During my time in college, I wish to develop my own leadership skills. Someone who I’ve seen as a leader since move-in day has been my Resident Advisor. I applied to be a Resident Advisor next year, and, if given the opportunity, expect to be one at least through my junior year. This role has many leadership aspects and will be invaluable to me in my professional life. It involves nurturement, solving disputes, and many more skills that will be valuable to me.

Service Engagement

One of my biggest regrets of high school was my lack of  community service. Through the Boy Scout program as a freshman, I completed service projects, but I wish I had done more throughout my four years. This will not be one of my regrets in college. I plan on attending professional school after my undergraduate program. A large aspect of being accepted into these graduate schools will be my community service. For this reason, I plan on volunteering at hospitals here in Columbus as well as in Cincinnati over breaks. This will give me valuable experience in the medical field, but also allow me to give back to the communities which I am so privileged to be a part of.
