This is the philosophy textbook(Lawhead’s The Philosophical Journey) recommended to me by a high school history teacher in the summer between high school and college. Through this textbook, email correspondence with the teacher, and conversations with peers, I developed and nurtured a growing interest in philosophy. Before, I never really had a passion in any academic field that I could point at and major in. Now, I am considering going all in with this specific field, changing my major and embracing this discipline. The experience I had last summer revitalized my academic passion and reminds me to work hard in college and beyond.

About Me

My name is Frank Wang. I’m a first-year Biology major from Dayton, Ohio. I’m a member of the Biological Sciences Scholar program. I am interested in some form of undergraduate biology research. I hope to get involved in the college community at Ohio State and further my education. This e-portfolio is designed to be a blog-style that chronicles my academic experiences through my time at The Ohio State University.

Year in Review

In the scholars program, I discovered the viable career paths available in the Biological Sciences. I discovered, by exploring other majors through clubs, peers, and professors, other passions and interests that yield to more subjectively interesting careers. Through going outside my comfort zone, I’ve become less shy and more outgoing, while still being comfortable and relaxed about my own self identity and self worth. For example, I will participate in lecture and speak up in clubs, something that I would rarely do six months ago. The Biological Sciences Scholars program helped me in this regard by being a wealth of information about practically everything on campus. I got help in the Younkin Success Center for Chem 1210 because of information provided in seminar. Due to the scholars program, I am more willing to try new things and think about new ideas. I believe that I am a more mature person and can handle far more work than before. For example, my classes seem a lot less daunting now than when we first started class. Probably, the classes didn’t get easier, but I got better at managing my own time and procrastinating less. The level of personal growth I’ve done this semester far exceeds anything I’ve done before in a similar time span and I look forward to only progressing further in the future.
