The middle of three children, I have always felt the need to prove myself; the “mother hen” of my group of friends, I have always felt the need to take care of others. These are my two most prominent characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. In high school, I spent all four years focused on building up my “resume” (my college application). I was organized and driven: determined to get the best grades, join the most clubs, and prepare myself for the future.
What I found was that I was not passionate about every single club I was a part of; and that’s okay! Many of the organizations that I was passionate about in high school have strongly influenced my choices (perhaps without my even knowing it at the time). The healing worlds of medicine and music have always captivated me; I am more than ready to embark as a pre-nursing major at OSU with a minor in music. Eventually, I hope to achieve a Music Therapy degree in addition to a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. My determination is still apparent, but my goals no longer spur from the need to prove myself or please others. Instead, I am merely focused on “figuring things out” for now.
It is very unlike me not to have a detailed plan; and, at first, it was definitely not by choice. But my idea of the future has already changed, and it will probably change again. For the present, I am ready to take what I love and work hard to come up with a new plan and put it into action.
I can’t wait to build my “true” future, piece by piece! 🙂
