Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in instructional design

See Philippa Hardman’s viewpoint on the role of artificial intelligence in instructional design:

How I Used AI to Turn a Document into a Course Storyboard & Prototype in <10 Mins

My observations:

  1. Note the discussion around learning styles, and note that “learning styles” as a concept has been negated by research. My recommendation, if you are compelled to lean into learning styles, is to refer to them as “learning preferences.”
  2. Note the blog author’s emphasis on the importance of careful writing in prompts. Prompts are essential to getting good results from AI.
  3. Note the example provided at the end of the blog and how a policy was turned into a (perhaps–you be the judge) more engaging course for learners. The strategy the blog author suggests may be applicable at the module or unit level for full-course designers and at the policy and procedure level for nursing professional development specialists.
