Addressing Online Course Issues Related to Low Internet Connectivity

Although fewer students experience problems with low bandwidth in accessing online course resources now compared to a decade ago, reliable internet connectivity and ownership of robust, high-speed devices are not ubiquitous for all students. Instructors still need to consider the possibility that some of their students may be affected by low internet connectivity. The good news is that these issues can be mitigated by thoughtful, intentional course design and planning. Course design that maximizes the learner’s educational experience even with less-than-optimal connectivity is especially important to support inclusive learning environments and in global learning experiences.

Read a blog post from Arizona State University listing specific low-bandwidth strategies to build inclusive student engagement into your online course. The list includes actionable steps to encourage successful student interaction with instructors, peers, and content as well as links to additional information about how to implement the strategies.
