Concept-Based Curriculum vs. Competency-Based Curriculum: What is the Difference?

Concept-Based Curriculum vs. Competency-Based Curriculum: What is the Difference?

In response to criticism of traditional teaching methods in nursing, two approaches have emerged that have led to some confusion: one is based on competencies in nursing and the other is based on concepts in nursing. A quick mental reference to differentiate the two and understand their relationship may help. When you hear “competency-based education,” think of “core competencies,” which are the measurable knowledge, skills, and qualities required for a nurse to deliver care. When you hear “concept-based education,” think of not-so-measurable “cognitive or conceptual frameworks.”

And, what is the relationship between the two? Student learning of concepts is assessed and evaluated through competencies. Read Jean Giddens’ short editorial in the Journal of Nursing Education for more helpful information on these complementary approaches to designing innovative nursing education.
