Innovation in Assessment: Public Service Announcement

In response to a quick move to virtual instruction, College of Nursing faculty member Christa Newtz revised her in-class group assignment in her Therapeutic Communications course to assess student skills in “plain language” communication about health topics. She asked students to work individually to create a public service announcement (PSA) on a topic of interest to the general public. She gave them the option to create a flyer, poster, video, or use other media format to communicate in plain language important concepts about achieving physical, mental, and spiritual well being.

Her teaching strategy is highlighted on OSU’s University Institute for Teaching and Learning web site. Read more on their How Are You Teaching page about Christa’s assignment, see some exceptional student submissions, and download PSA resources to inspire your own course assignment.
