APA Style Guide, 7th Edition

The 7th edition of the APA style guide (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association) was published on October 1, 2019.  Here are just a few of the changes:

  • one space after a period is officially the preference now
  • in-text citations and the reference list will be formatted differently with regard to number of authors
  • book publisher location is no longer needed in reference list
  • Times New Roman 12-point font is no longer king
  • heading formats are updated
  • the singular “they” is endorsed

The APA has published a more detailed description of upcoming changes and a blog post with a discussion around some commonly asked questions.  Check the APA Twitter feed for more interesting articles on the new APA style.

The new guide is listed on Amazon in various formats, with the spiral-bound edition costing about $40.  A quick reference guide to bibliographic formats is available online., as are hyperlinks to specific style and grammar guidelines.
