Turnitin for Students
If you have concerns about plagiarism on essay-type course work, you may be able to avoid problems before they have a chance to begin by allowing students to submit a draft assignment to Carmen Assignments where they can check their own work for duplication of content through Turnitin. Turnitin is a tool that helps ensure academic integrity by comparing written student work to a database of text assignments. It then produces an “originality report” that provides students (and instructors) with information about how much of the submission is similar to text found in the Turnitin databases. ODEE’s resource page on Turnitin has more information about best practices in the use of Turnitin to protect academic integrity, how to create a Turnitin assignment in Carmen, and language you can include in your syllabus related to use of Turnitin in your course. Using Turnitin as a tool to evaluate drafts of assignments (rather than a punitive tool after final submission) can cultivate an environment of trust in the classroom by giving students more control over their own growth as a writer and scholar.
