The step project that I chose to complete was part of the computer build course. During this course we learned how to research parts, where to buy them, and how to assemble them to make our own computers. At the end of the project, I had built my own computer that I can use for school, work, and my personal life.
Before I embarked on the step project, I had no clue how to assemble computers or even the components in them. I had always been interested in the concept of designing and building my own computer but had never taken the initiative to build one myself. By the end of this project, I had finally completed this goal I had of building and understanding computers.
Not only did I learn more about building computers, but I also learned more about research, preparations, and budgeting. An important part of this project was making sure the parts I ordered worked together, fit in the budget, and would provide the needs I had. After ordering the parts, I learned a lot about patience as I meticulously assembled the computer. Without first learning patience I doubt this project would have been possible for me.
Throughout this project I got the chance to meet and interact with many new people. The first of these people was my step cohort leader and my cohort class. This group of individuals met every week during the school semester as we all learned various skills from interviewing tactics to study habits. As well as learning these skills, we grew to know each other as classmates and friends.
After the cohort classes were finished, I started my computer building classes where I met my instructor and class. The instructor was one of the most knowledgeable people I have known when it comes to technology. He was able to help me with any problem I had throughout the process. As well as having a great instructor, the class was great too. The people in the class were happy to talk through any problems they were having and would come to class excited to share their progress.
This project has also provided me with the opportunity to become closer to my brother and my friends. Growing up, my brother and my friends were into building computers. Being that I had never built a computer or understood the process, I was never able to talk to them about it. After building my computer I have been able to talk with the people I am close to about my new passion.
These changes and developments in my life have contributed greatly to who I am now. I consider myself much more patient due to the careful installation of parts, I have learned life skills such as budgeting, study habits, and interview skills, I have met new friends and grown closer to old ones, and finally I have completed the project that I set out to do and have a new computer to prove it. I am extremely grateful for the step program and this amazing opportunity they have provided.
