Europe Study Abroad

For my STEP project, I decided to go on a study abroad trip. I traveled around Europe learning about architecture and landscapes from professors that taught at the Knowlton school of Architecture and experienced many different cultures through food, events, and talking to people I met along the way.

A big part of our trip consisted of drawing the architectural sites we visited. Our professors had us do sketching exercises to practice speed and accuracy. The instruction and frequency of how much we drew pushed me to really learn how to draw quickly and effectively.

This trip has introduced me to cultures I have never experienced before. I feel more independent and capable of doing things on my own. I am less afraid to meet strangers and talk to them but I also have learned the hard way to be more cautious in unfamiliar places and how important it is to learn about the people there and what is happening in the country you are in. Some people don’t want to talk or be open, but the ones that do have some interesting stories to tell.

The site visits and tours taught me a lot about the architecture and landscapes in Europe. I got to see old, ornate cathedrals and modern projects as well as many different styles of gardens and landscapes. Our professors talked about the different environments, influences and events that helped to shape the design of these places.

I met locals and talked with them about what it is like to live in Europe as well as others who were also traveling through Europe. These people told me about themselves and the places they were from. I befriended students on the trip that tried new things and explored Europe with me during our free days. They helped critique my sketches and give insight into the places we were visiting.

Seeing a world outside of my everyday life reminds me that there are so many more things that I need to go see for myself and that I will never be done learning and trying to grow.
