First-year STEM EE Scholars are given first priority to live together in Houston House. This shared living environment is a component of the program and helps STEM EE Scholars as they develop community during the first year on campus. Commuters are welcome to be a part of our Scholars programs, and will receive access to the communal spaces in Houston House.
** Please note that space in the prescribed residence halls is not guaranteed and students can be placed in other accommodations due to program demand if necessary.
During the first semester, STEM EE Scholars will take a 1-credit hour seminar with the program manager. This will help you learn about the program & keep you apprised of community events. Our seminar will help you dive deeper into your area of interest, make connections between different fields, and begin building a professional network in and around the campus community.
STEM EE Scholars are required to attend community meetings and events held by the program. Events include faculty/guest speakers, mentor family challenges, game/trivia nights, day trips, movie showings, service outreach, book club meetings, intramural sports games, etc. Every semester, our student run Leadership Council takes input from scholars on what events to plan. If you have an event you want to see… we can plan it!
STEM EE Scholars give back to our community. Every scholar is required to complete service each semester. Scholars have participated in Buckeyethon, worked with students in the local schools, assisted in building homes with Habitat for Humanity, etc. In 2018-2019, STEM Scholars completed 1700 hours of service – that is over 70 days worth of aid to the community!
First year scholars are also required to have a a one-on-one meeting with the program manager each semester, perform reflective writing with their Honors & Scholars ePortfolio, and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Optional: First Year Scholars may choose to (or be peer pressured to) show obscene levels of Buckeye Pride:
