Welcome to the Speech Psychoacoustics Laboratory
Research performed in the laboratory involves human hearing and its impairment. We seek to further our understanding of the normally operating auditory system, and to clarify the specific limitations that occur in cases of hearing loss. Of particular interest is our remarkable ability to perceive speech in both quiet and in the presence of various background noises. This ability is often lost in cases of hearing impairment, causing poor speech understanding in noise to be a primary complaint of people with hearing loss. Accordingly, one of our main interests involves the restoration of accurate speech intelligibility in noise for hearing-impaired listeners.
