Perception of Spanish-Accented English in Utah

Ellie Kaiser, PhD student

This study aims to see what social perceptions Utahans have about speakers of accented English.  A matched guise study will be used to facilitate judgments of speech, and participants’ judgments will be compared to their backgrounds.  Utah has a quickly growing bilingual education system, but problems with equitable accessibility, especially to the Latinx community.  This study hopes to provide insights to how different types of bilingualism are valued (or not) by the community.
