Liquids in Havana Cuban Spanish

This project investigates the productions of /r/ and /l/ and measures the duration of other consonants following the deletion of these sounds to determine to what extent compensatory lengthening occurs.  The most common realization of /r/ was as an approximant, which previous research had not found to be common in Western Cuba.  Additionally, while compensatory lengthening did occur and was found to be significantly more common after a deleted /r/ or /l/, it did not occur to the same extent that previous research suggested.  This study demonstrates the value of systematic acoustic analysis for studies of compensatory lengthening.
