Reading Day Activities

The logo for Reading Day

Finals can be stressful and slightly overwhelming but one of the things I look forward to during finals (besides winter break) is Reading Day! Here at the Ohio Union, Reading Day is an entire day dedicated to providing free activities to students to relieve stress in the wake of exam preparation. Need a quiet place to study? How about a snack to refuel you for a little more studying? The Ohio Union can help you with all that and more during Reading Day! Check out some of the great activities planned below.

OUABreakfast: 8-10 a.m. in the East Ballroom

Start your day off right by enjoying a hot breakfast, coffee, and tea with OUAB. Food will be available while supplies last.

OUABreakfast will have food available to students in the Union.

Let’s Talk: 9-5 p.m. in the Milestones Room

Stop by for an informal one-on-one consultation with a Counseling and Consultation Services therapist. There is no appointment needed and no paperwork required. Come and gain new insight, solutions and resources for any problems you may be experiencing. Have a problem? Let’s Talk.

Reading Day Lunch Break: 12-1 p.m. in the East Ballroom

Take a lunch break and refuel. Food will be available while supplies last.

Pause for Paws: 1-4 p.m. in the Creative Arts Room

Need a little puppy love in your life, even if it’s just for a couple of hours? Come put a smile on your face with the very adorable and friendly therapy dogs.

Happy Studying!

Wellness Wednesday: Midterm Motivation

As we enter Week 6 of the semester, midterm season is upon us. Exams, papers and projects fill our to-do lists, so how do we make time get everything done? Here are a few tips and tricks from upperclassmen students on how to make it through midterm season.

  1. Schedule time to study

Take out your planners and block out time to study. By scheduling designated “study time,” you can hold yourself more accountable. This also allows you to put time aside that you won’t fill with other meetings, appointments etc.

  1. Prioritize

Make a list of all of your tasks and prioritize which ones need the most attention and require the most time. Sometimes, a project due a week from now may require more time than studying for your exam in two days. Prioritizing tasks also helps you balance commitments other than studying.

  1. Find a quiet study space (away from your bed)

Even though your dorm room or apartment may be the most convenient place to study, it comes with distractions (such as friends, TV and a nice, cozy bed). Try dedicating a few hours studying at Thompson Library or the Ohio Union. These spaces have plenty of quiet study nooks that will help you focus. My favorite is the Stanley D. Gottsegen Lounge on the third floor of the Ohio Union.

  1. Take breaks

While studying is important, you also need to take breaks to let yourself recharge. Representatives for Coffee-mate are in the Great Hall every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Stop by the Coffee-mate stand and refresh with a free coffee sample. You can try some of Coffee-mate’s new flavors and discover your new go-to coffee creamer.

Fun fact: bring your own mug to the Union and they will fill it up for you! Also, if you have a student org that wants complimentary coffee and creamer at your meetings, let a brand ambassador know next time you see one on campus. The brand ambassador will consider your student organization for this complimentary service.

  1. Reward yourself

Studying for long periods of time can be exhausting, so make sure to reward yourself for your hard work! Rewards can come in all shapes or sizes: a smoothie, an episode of your favorite TV show, a quick workout or even a brief nap! Just make sure you set a time limit on your break so you can get back to studying.

Midterm season is difficult, especially with nice fall weather and football games. But with these tips, hopefully you’ll be able to tackle your midterms head-on. Good luck!

Student Org Spotlight: Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE)

Pi Sigma Epsilon is the nation’s premiere co-ed sales, marketing and management fraternity. PSE holds frequent professional workshops and social events, as well as sales and speech competitions for members throughout the year. President Katie Tippy sets high expectations for the group: “Our chapter prides itself on an ability to professionally develop members and improve their business acumen while creating lifelong friendships. The experience we get from working with clients and corporate sponsors is invaluable: being a part of Pi Sigma Epsilon is something our members will cherish for life.”

Pi Sigma Epsilon recently became involved with BuckeyeThon and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, a cause near and dear to Ohio State. Every February, the Ohio Union hosts a 24 hour dance marathon, the culmination of a yearlong effort by students, faculty/staff and the community to both emotionally and financially support BuckeyeThon families.

Sunday, October 4, Pi Sigma Epsilon is hosting their second annual “Fore the Kids” golf scramble at Foxfire Golf Course with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Golf, raffle prizes and refreshments are available to any students, faculty or community members interested, and 100 percent of the proceeds go straight into a donor drive for the dance marathon. Last year, Fore The Kids was able to raise $5,808.35 for the dance marathon, making PSE the top organization to donate in the Max M. Fisher College of Business, and they expect to raise even more this year.

“All of our members are beyond enthusiastic about BuckeyeThon, and after the golf outing last year more and more members have been compelled to participate in fundraising activities,” explained Service Director Meghan Sullivan. “I remember one of the most touching moments from the dance marathon in the Union last year was when one of the mothers came up and hugged everyone on our team, thanking us for helping to save the lives of children just like her daughter. Sometimes fundraising feels like you’re just one little drop in a hat, but moments like those really put into perspective how important every dollar is to make a difference.”

Sign ups for the golf scramble can be in teams of four or individually. Students and community members can make a donation or register here by October 1: http://forethekids.eventzilla.net/web/event?eventid=2139086091

A Sneak Peek at Sneaker Freaks

We at the sOUrce never cease to be amazed at the many unique events that are held at our Union. A perfect example of this is the Sneaker Freaks Columbus Expo happening on September 26 in our Grand Ballroom. This event is hosted by the sneaker connoisseurs at Sneaker Freaks, a local business started by Jwork Limited and Fresh Sole, as well as local DJ D-Boogie. This collaborative effort allows them to host an expo where sneaker enthusiasts can buy, sell and trade some of the most popular and unique sneakers out there. Not only does Sneaker Freaks provide a great way to explore the latest shoe styles, they also aim to create awareness about youth violence, especially violence over sneakers. In doing so they have partnered with Community for New Direction (CND), which aims to promote a safe and violence-free city.

While the Ohio Union serves as the living room of our campus, providing space and amenities for student group and university organizations, it is also a perfect representation of how The Ohio State University is a pillar of the Columbus community. Organizations like Sneaker Freaks can host their expos and conferences at our Union. This allows us to play a part in promoting better business, better education and better citizenship.
