How To: Be Successful at Riding the CABS

The CABS, Campus Area Bus System, is a campus transportation service provided by The Ohio State University Transit and Traffic Management. What’s great about CABS is the multiple routes that make different parts of campus more accessible, it’s quick, and best yet it’s free!

Once upon a time ago I was slightly nervous to get on a CABS bus. I didn’t understand how the routes worked or where they went. I also didn’t realize how many resources the university provides students to make hopping on a CABS quick and easy!

Check out these quick and easy tips for mastering CABS:

  1. Download the app – If you don’t already have the Ohio State app, go and download it now. Seriously, download it. The Ohio State app not only makes checking grades and locating classes easier but it also includes a buses feature where you can track CABS. The bus app allows you to look up different routes, figure out the nearest bus stop, tells you an anticipated wait time and most importantly GPS tracks all the CABS.
  2. Plan ahead – Nothing is worse than having to chase the bus while everyone around you watches this chaos unfold. You don’t have to be that person if you plan ahead. Look at the app before getting ready to leave for your destination and figure out which route you need to take, where the bus is located and how long until it gets to your stop. Maybe you’ll have to speed walk every now and then to catch the bus but I guarantee you if you plan ahead you’ll never have to chase the bus again.
  3. Don’t forget bus etiquette – I personally think it’s important to treat others the way you’d wish to be treated and this mantra certainly applies to riding the bus. Some great ways to show your bus etiquette according to Ohio State’s Transit and Traffic Management are to let others exit before you enter the bus, remember to hold on to the bars if you’re standing and to avoid congesting the bus, use the front door to enter and the back door to exit. Most importantly, don’t forget to thank the drivers! They work hard to make sure each and every one of us arrives safely to wherever we may be heading.
