Ultrasound Interest Group begins “UltraFest”

Ultrasounds are an integral part of today’s medical practices.  On Saturday, February 21, the Ultrasound Interest Group and The Ohio State College of Medicine held a free Ultrasound symposium at Meiling Hall, called UltraFest.  Ultrafest provided medical students with hands-on training for bedside ultrasound as well as three guest speakers who are well-regarded in the field.

The student organization, Ultrasound Interest Group, advocates for a more focused approach to student and physician ultrasound education.  A three step educational path leads to a point where one can make crucial bedside decisions in a department such as the ICU.  The path starts with knowledge of anatomy, then clinical assessment and finally ends with decision making in a hospital setting.

The group provides a series of tutorials on their website that range from the basics through vascular access and a multitude of topics in between.  Each tutorial contains a video demonstration and educational slides for the viewer to help individuals understand the topic.  The Ultrasound Interest Group also details a “Case of the Month” that walks the audience through a unique ultrasound examination.  Simply put, there’s much to gain for any student interested in medicine, just by looking through their website.

The Macedonian Connection

MASO – The Macedonian-American Student Association – is Ohio State’s first student group that brings a Macedonian voice to campus.  As a newly founded organization on campus, they have big plans for the future.

MASO is a campus affiliate of the United Macedonian Diaspora, a new youth initiative called Generation M.  On campus, MASO seeks to bring cultural awareness to the Ohio State community while also promoting the professional development of its members.

The organization has a number of plans to carry out this goal.  Currently, MASO sets up a language table at Hagerty Hall with hopes of educating students about their rich culture in an interactive manner.  In the future, MASO plans on participating in next year’s Taste of OSU at the Ohio Union to share their unique foods and culture.  Additionally, they are planning a leadership conference this April with presentations from influential Macedonians.

It’s Time to Smooch a Pooch!

Smooch A Pooch is taking over the Ohio Union’s Great Hall Art Gallery today.  Students will be able to meet the loving animals who help our military veterans.  If that didn’t catch your attention, then their doggy kissing booth will.

The event is presented by Pets for Vets On Campus, a student organization that supports both the national non-profit and Columbus chapter of Pets For Vets.  The organization works to pair veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and depression with rescued shelter dogs.  Pets For Vets then works with the rescued dogs to help them meet the veteran’s personal needs.  The animals are a source of unconditional love, truly making a difference for many.

The goal of Smooch A Pooch is to showcase the benefits companion animals can have for returning veterans.  Additionally, Smooch A Pooch seeks to create awareness of the challenges faced by returning veterans.  According to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, up to 20% of veterans who served in Iraq & Afghanistan are diagnosed with PTSD each year.  Three to four million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters each year.  This is a pairing that makes an impact in the lives of veterans and their animal counterparts, man’s best friend some might say.

Make sure to stop by today sometime before 6 p.m. to interact with the animals and learn more about the immense benefits they provide to our returning veterans.  Do you have a favorite memory of animals making an impact on you?  Please share with us in the comments!

Student Organization Spotlight: Project Nicaragua

Project Nicaragua

Project Nicaragua

Many Buckeyes use their time and talent to help others around the world.  One particular place that has received a variety of support efforts from the Ohio State community is Nicaragua.  Project Nicaragua at Ohio State is a student organization and one chapter of a national nonprofit that operates across the United States. The main focus of Project Nicaragua at Ohio State is the Rancho Grande Initiative, where the organization works to develop a destitute region through promoting health, expanding education, creating economic empowerment and researching nutrition. Rancho Grande is a rural, impoverished community in Northeast Nicaragua that was devastated by the recent bankruptcy of local coffee plantations.  It now faces high rates of malnutrition, limited career opportunities and no option for higher education among children and young adults.Nicaraguan Children

The Ohio State chapter collaborates with a community-based non-profit, Amor en Acción, to target these issues through work with Amor en Acción’s agricultural and technical school Escuela Tierra Prometida, two feeding centers for children and other developing community projects. Project Nicaragua at Ohio State meets every week as a group to develop projects, curriculum and fundraising ideas.  Members of the group take trips to Nicaragua twice a year to implement these projects.  Currently, Project Nicaragua is working on advanced curriculum along with distance teaching, small business development and public health development through a variety of projects and community outreach.Project Nicaragua Group Shot

Don’t miss the 2015 Project Nicaragua Euchre Tournament TONIGHT!  The event is in the Great Hall Meeting Room from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  There will be a cash prize, free food and undoubtedly a great time.  All proceeds from the event go to the kids and families of Rancho Grande.  The event costs $5 per person and teams consist of two people.  We hope to see you there!

Right Above Your Nose

"Circus Acrobats"

Did you know there are Circus Acrobats performing right under the Ohio Union’s ceiling? The sculpture, named Circus Acrobats, is composed of two figures soaring above the Great Hall.  Circus Acrobats was created in 1988 by world famous artist George Segal and was cast in bronze before being painted white.  The work is a permanent gift to The Ohio State University from the George and Helen Segal Foundation.

The George and Helen Segal Foundation’s interest in Ohio State started at a 2013 exhibition where photographs of Segal at work were displayed.  The exhibition was of Donald Lokuta, an Ohio State alumnus who achieved his phD in 1975.

George didn’t know he wanted to be an artist at first but as he moved through life into adulthood, he found his true passion was in art.  (It’s never too late to find your passion, Buckeyes! Don’t rush it.) By 1958 he had begun experimenting in sculpture, and just two years later he had a one man show to his name featuring several of his works.  Segal’s most famous works are cast life-size figures that are set into just the right settings.  The placement of these figures plays a huge role into how the artwork is perceived and is part of why many of Segal’s works are so special.  This certainly holds true in the Ohio Union. Click the photo below if you wish to see photos of the installation process in the Ohio Union.
