Afrikan American Farewell Celebration

2014 Spring Graduate celebrates receiving an award at AAFC

2014 Spring Graduate celebrates receiving an award at AAFC

This year marks the 23rd Annual Afrikan American Farewell Celebration (AAFC)! The AAFC celebrates the great achievements students of African descent accomplish, despite many challenges, throughout their matriculation at Ohio State. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Student Life, and the Student Life Multicultural Center annually sponsor the event to acknowledge and celebrate those students who will be graduating in the spring or summer, or who have graduated in the previous Fall Semester, through a personalized graduation celebration. Each year, approximately 120 graduating seniors gather with their friends, families and loved ones to celebrate the closing of a chapter of their lives and the beginning of a new one. Archie Griffin, President and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association will serve as the keynote speaker for AAFC and will offer remarks to officially welcome students into the alumni society.

AAFC is open to all students, but it is encouraged that students who participate have a connection or some type of understanding of African or African American culture. “At AAFC, we will take an in-depth look at practices and rituals within African culture to celebrate and commemorate the transition from one stage of life into the next stage” states Antonio Phillip-Lytle, university faculty member and member of the AAFC planning committee. This program is used as an opportunity to provide a special

recognition for students that identify with both African and African American culture within our society. At the closing of the ceremony, graduates in attendance will receive a commemorative pin, program booklet and stole. Although registration for graduating seniors to participate in this event has now closed, if you would like more information about this event please email aafc@osu.edu.

22nd Annual Fashion Show held in the Ohio Union

The Ohio State University’s Fashion Production Association (FPA) hosted its 22nd Annual Fashion Show production! Each year, the student organization provides those of any major the opportunity to take part in a highly creative design show. The students imagine, sketch and create original designs to be considered for modeling on the runway for nearly 600 people. With the guidance and advice from a notable Fashion and Retail Studies professor, Dr. Rudd, designer’s garments were worn proudly by student models and strutted down the runway. The production team members execute all aspects of the fashion show – the runway design, fund-raising, marketing, silent auction, music, script and pretty much anything else pertaining to the show! Each year they strive to improve upon the shows of previous years, and were pleased to present to you this year’s show, “Unwritten: From Page to Stage”.

Fashion Show

The theme of the show was based on genres of literature. Each of the five acts within the show will explore a specific genre of literature – Classics, Poetry, Teen Fiction, Romance and Fantasy. “The designs that the audience will see on the stage are inspired and influenced by those various literature genres, hence the term ‘from page to stage,’” states Alyssa Martig, Director of Marketing for FPA.“Unwritten: From Page to Stage” occurred on April 11, 2015, in the Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom, which is located on the second floor of the Ohio Union. The doors opened at 7 p.m. and included a silent auction. The show began at 8 followed by a small reception. All were welcomed to attend this event and encouraged to come out to support the amazing work of 29 extremely talented designers.

Presale tickets were sold for reduced rates – student tickets were $5 and all others were $10. Tickets sold at the door were $10 for students and $15 for all other attendees. All proceeds from ticket sales and silent auction will benefit Fashion and Retail Studies students by providing funds to further improve the Computer Aided Design Lab located in Campbell Hall.

If you would like more information about the show, you can find them on twitter @FPAatOSU or facebook (The OSU Fashion Production Association). You can also find their promotional video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0FUmfGYXmU&feature=youtu.be)

Taste of OSU

The Ohio Union will soon be filled with hungry Buckeyes ready to experience the foods of the world. Taste of OSU is one of the university’s largest cultural celebrations, attracting close 4,000 people to be immersed into a one-time event filled with sights, sounds, and flavors from around the world. The Office of International Affairs, along with 30 student organizations, and Student Life Dining Services chefs are coming together to prepare an evening of international food, exhibits and cultural performances for the Ohio State campus community.

Each year, cultural based student organizations set up booths throughout the Grand Ballroom and Performance Hall to share a “taste” of their home culture. As a bonus, there will also be special performances throughout the evening put on by some of the featured student organizations.  Admission is free and food tickets are $1 each for samples of the international cuisines.
