With the mission to entertain, educate and improve cultural competence on campus, the African Youth League (AYL) continued their tradition of celebrating African culture through their annual African Week events. From the blood drive on Monday in Seibert Hall to the “Fashion Across the Continent” show yesterday in Baker West Performance Space, AYL has provided a large array of opportunities to promote and preserve the culture and heritage of African people while encouraging interactions with students regardless of their ethnic background. “I think there’s a lot of mystery behind what Africa is. Although we’re on a college campus, students know surprisingly little about Africa,” states Adaeze Okoli, current President of the African Youth League.

There are only two more days left in African Week and there is no doubt that AYL has plans to end this week in a bang! The schedule of events denotes Friday, November 7 as African Takeover Day with the location listed as “campus-wide.” I’m going to take a wild guess and say that whatever they have in store for us will be a great surprise…. It’s up to you to be in the right place at the right time!

One thing we do know is that African Night 2014 is happening in the Performance Hall this Saturday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m. This annual event features an evening packed with entertainment that typically hosts an audience of 500 students and community members. Come out to enjoy exploring the diversity of African culture through music, dance, drama, fashion and much more. AYL is also hosting a dinner before the event from 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. in the MLK Lounge located within Hale Hall. To make this experience even more enticing, all of the night’s festivities are free!

I must say, hats off to the African Youth League. They have truly excelled in their efforts to engage the Ohio State campus in fun, interactive and creative ways that educate others about their passion and love for their culture.
