BuckeyeThon

I was fortunate to participate in Ohio State’s largest philanthropy event, BuckeyeThon, that consists of a dance marathon to raise money for cancer research. With my business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, we raised over $20,000 to donate to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to aid the fight to end childhood cancer.

Hearing the story from two parents who lost their son ten years ago that would have graduated high school this year served as a reminder of why we stand on our feet for twelve hours to contribute to this battle. This raised my awareness of the problem, especially with how prevalent the issue is affecting families as 43 children are diagnosed with cancer each day.

One of the speakers asked out of the 2,000 students there at the dance marathon to stand up if they had a family member or friend that has ever been diagnosed with cancer. Every student stood up.

Seeing the impact our student body can make with raising $1.7 million dollars inspires me to continue with philanthropy events like this in the future. I am incredibly moved by this cause and I look forward to doing BuckeyeThon again next year.

About Me

Hi my name is Celia Soller and I am a first year at The Ohio State University! I grew up in Marysville, Ohio which is a suburb outside of Columbus. One of the things that drew me to Ohio State was the digital learning initiative. This partnership with Apple provided all the first-years with iPads, making OSU the first digital flagship university and a place I felt I could make a difference.

Coming here I knew I wanted to major in Marketing because I am fascinated by the way people make decisions as well as the creative side into communicating ideas. Being exposed to the many technological opportunities on campus sparked my decision to pursue a second major in Communication Technology and a minor in Business Analytics.

My first semester, I met some amazing people throughout my involvements. I enjoy spending time with my fellow Business Scholars, brothers of Delta Sigma Pi Professional Fraternity, and my teammates in OSU Women’s Club Soccer.

Delta Sigma Pi

This is a picture of my name tag and pin for the professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. Before my first couple weeks at college, I did not have any knowledge of business fraternities, but after hearing about the opportunities of service, academic enrichment, and professional development I decided to look into being a part of this community. I was ecstatic to receive my bid because out of 200 applicants I was unsure I would get one my first semester.

Out of the other business fraternities on campus, I knew Delta Sigma Pi was the fit for me. I liked the aspect that everyone is a business major because this helps immensely with academics when navigating courses to take and figuring out my specialization. I was also impressed with all the accomplishments of the people in DSP ranging from interning at amazing places, leading on campus in other student orgs, and serving others across the globe. What ultimately cemented my decision was talking to the people. The conversations were anything but surface level and getting to know them even further throughout my pledge semester showed me how much they genuinely care about the well being of each other.

This group has become another family for me on campus that I know I can go to if I ever need help with anything. Representing the symbols of Delta Sigma Pi on my pin and nametag is a physical reminder to me to embody the fraternity’s pillars of service, professionalism, scholarship, and of course brotherhood in my everyday encounters.
