First things first, being a student is difficult. There is so much outside of your control and sometimes you are just plain unmotivated and burnt out from doing work. To combat that, here are a few tips and tricks that I have learned throughout my college career that have helped boost my productivity and push me through to the end of the semester!
- Body Doubling

- If you are not aware body doubling is when you work with at least one other person in a shared space (physically or virtually) while not necessarily working on the same task. If you ever wondered why you feel more motivated to do work in a library or coffee shop with other people, there is actual science to back it up. Body doubling has done wonders for my productivity and now my friends know that when I FaceTime them, I don’t always have big news but sometimes I just need another person there so I can finish the big paper I’ve been putting off.

- Change your Scenery

- I’m guilty of doing work in my bed and then wondering why I never get anything done. While my bed is comfortable it is detrimental to my brain function. Getting out of bed and my room entirely has been a surefire way to improve my focus. Changing your scenery whether that is going outside or just to another room in your house or dorm can strip the boredom from your brain and boost productivity.

- TAKE BREAKS

- Now this may seem counterintuitive, and if you are anything like me pushing through even when tired seems to be the best option but this is not always helpful. When your brain is not functioning, it is best to take a break from the task, refresh and come back with a clearer headspace. Research suggests that taking a couple of long breaks or several mini ones stops you from burning out completely, leading to a faster recovery time. Reminder: taking a break is not unproductive, it is necessary.
- Hide your phone (yes really!)
- If you are anything like me, whenever I have an assignment due my phone seems to be the most interesting object on earth. I’ll open Tik Tok and before I know it an hour has passed. To end this cycle, I’ve started placing my phone not out of reach but just out of sight! Research shows that just by seeing your phone you are more likely to pick it up, so by even putting my phone behind my computer or in my bag nearby, I am more productive than if it was right next to my keyboard. Think, out of sight, out of mind!

- Snacks!

- There are many benefits to snacking, and it’s not just satisfying your cravings. Your brain can’t focus when you are hungry because there is little to no food sustaining your body. Snacking gives your brain an added boost and improves your mood, which in turn improves your ability to get work done.
