Figures & Collage

I’ve been thinking (again) about the color brown, the land, and the melanin in our skin. But also I’ve been thinking about figures, limbs, expressions of concern, expression of fear, and expression of contempt.

We might feel these things when we think of soil, of dirt, and of climate change.

We might feel this way for the land.

We might feel this way amongst people with greed.

We might feel this way with people who are ignorant and certain.

There are a lot of feelings and a lot of movements. I’d like to capture some of that.

Series 2

My focus for series 2 is trying to understand how we as humans perceive soil. I am asking why is there a negative connotation surrounding soil and why we refer to things that are unclean as “SOILed” or “DIRTy”? And why do we view shades of brown as ugly?

I’m transitioning my work from the simple concept of soil to include the idea of human interaction with soil and our cognizance of the color brown as seen in the land and in our skin.
