Finishing touches
More texture
As the semester comes to an end, I am working very hard to quickly but carefully add texture to the figurative landscape piece. Here are some progress pictures:
Transition back to Figurative Landscape Painting
After taking a brief break from my figurative landscape painting, I am feeling ready to dive back into it! To prepare my mind, I made a few quick sketches while referencing Realistic Figure Drawing by Joseph Sheppard.
Additionally, I thought about soil landscapes and created a quick scene using oil paint – an unfinished imprimatura.
Ocean Reflection
I went to a few beaches during my short visit to Massachusetts and after two of the trips to the ocean, I wanted to capture what I saw.
Below is my work after the first beach:
Below is my work inspired by the second beach. I was really interested in how the waves came forth and went back. I tried to emulate this with a spray bottle and ultramarine watercolor pigment. I am not necessarily sure where this exploration is taking me. I have just been thinking a lot about waves and their ability to crash and be calm. I felt so free when I saw the ocean, and also like an itch had been scratched – I felt relief. I think I can let go of the waves for a while and I feel ready to return to the work with figures and soil!
Deeper Dive…
I took some time to visit the ocean and think more about waves, the overwhelming and the calming feelings they capture and convey:

At Home Progress
I’m working from home on a piece that is primarily acrylic paint right now. When I am satisfied with the acrylic layer, I intend to bring this piece into the studio to keep working with oil.
